Daniel Weintraub: Schwarzenegger goes home again, to rude welcome [Santa Monica College graduation]

-- snip --

The governor, here to deliver a commencement address to 600 graduates at Santa Monica College, was greeted by hundreds of protesters, including a large handful of students and faculty who turned their backs throughout a 16-minute speech that was partially obscured by boos, whistles and catcalls from the audience...

-- snip --

...The protests were organized by ANSWER, a militant anti-war group whose members hand out socialist literature and chant things such as "Long live Lenin, long live Marx." Others marched in defense of immigrants or in opposition to capital punishment...

-- snip --

...Only a small portion of the protesters were students, and they complained vaguely about Schwarzenegger's "cuts" to the education budget. And here the disconnect between the governor's policies and his image came into stark relief.

Schwarzenegger has not cut community colleges at all, but in fact has boosted spending in his first budget and in his current proposal. The fee increase he backed a year ago, from $18 per unit to $26, still left California's community college costs the lowest in the nation by far, and it also helped tens of thousands of needy students who do not pay any fees at all qualify for additional financial aid. In effect, it put a modest additional burden on the middle class to help the poor - something you'd think might be popular in this bastion of income redistribution.

But Jennie Branden, a 21-year-old co-ed whose T-shirt was painted with the slogan "Save our Schools, Expel Arnold," said she and her fellow students were "appalled" that the governor was invited to speak.

"It's outrageous," an indignant Branden told me. "We deserve better."

So does Schwarzenegger.

The shenanigans at Santa Monica JC last Tuesday were an embarrassment to everyone.

I can only hope that the individuals participating in this rude behavior find their tenure on the state payroll short lived.

"...a 16-minute speech that was partially obscured by boos, whistles and catcalls from the audience.

It was probably no coincidence that the message the embattled chief executive tried to deliver to the students at his alma mater was one that focused on perseverance, on ignoring the naysayers who tell you that you will never succeed, on facing down fear and moving forward with determination.

All those things marked Schwarzenegger's advance through the worlds of bodybuilding, acting and politics. And they are coming in pretty handy about now." - Daniel Weintraub

From www.la.indymedia.org:

Video from SMC Commencement

SANTA MONCIA - Tuesday, June 14, 2005 The governor of California was basically booed off stage during a commencement address to graduating students at Santa Monica College today.

Boos, and chants continued non-stop through out the gov’s speech.

While we won the battle OUTSIDE...
...things do not appear to have gone very well INSIDE the stadium. :(
Perhaps the video by OUR guy (Jeffers Dodge) will show what actually happened more accurately.
We should have THAT video posted online -- soon.

"Long live Lenin, long live Marx"

These people know nothing about the history of the 20th century. (What did they get taught in school?--Never
mind, I guess they went to public schools in California. . .)

I went to public school in California. What's that got to do with it?

Here's some more video footage of the graduation. Note the individual with blond hair and a blue cutoff shirt who's chanting and giving the thumbs down. That's Jeffery Higley, managing editor of the Corsair.

From Captain's Quarters blog :
"...It seems rather churlish to stage a political protest at a non-political event like this college graduation.

It hijacks an evening that should have focused on the graduates, instead of some selfish and self-serving political opponents of the Governator. But if they wanted to protest, they should have observed enough decorum to allow Arnold to at least be heard by the audience in attendance.

Actions like this point out a political narcissism and absolutism that reveal nothing but the immaturity of Arnold's opposition." - Captain Ed

Just goes to show you, Schwarzenegger is getting to the left real bad. They are livid that a governor would challenge their machine and want to change much of the Democratic boondoggle.

Dan hits the nail on the head here:

...he (arnold) would have to confront the public employee unions that have come to control most of what emerges from the Legislature

The public employee unions are going to use everything they have to fight the "paycheck protection" initiative this November, and slamming Arnold is just one aspect of that strategy.

More street theater will be needed this summer, but the real test will be when it comes time to work GOTV the weekend of November 4-6, and then on election day on Tuesday the 8th. Are California FReepers gonna help confront the union thugs at the polls when the refuse to let us have access to the voter lists? Are we gonna walk door to door to get Republicans and Libertarians to the polls? Sure hope there will be a bunch of us out on the street that weekend, with clipboards, rather than signs, in hand.

"Schwartzenegger has not cut Community Colleges at all." An exception should be made in the case of Santa Monica Community College. Line out their appropriation. Let the students find honest work, jobs that illegal aliens won't do.

From the post-FReep celebration...
...courtesy of David Forbes.
Less than HALF of the folks from the rally were able to attend this post-FReep gathering, though...
...as there was a competing meeting scheduled (without my prior knowledge) at the same time, in a different city. :(

From the other thread:
As is our tradition, in our recent post-FReep discussions, we have been reviewing what we did RIGHT, what we did WRONG, and what we could have done BETTER.
The bottom line remains:
1 - We took on A.N.S.W.E.R. and the "union thugs" on their home turf, and shut them down.
(They were anticipated to have 3,000 to 5,000 protesters outside, and they had 200 to 300, at BEST.)

2 - We got EXTENSIVE (positive) media coverage for our "pro-Arnold" message.
(We were PARTICULARLY effective in getting onto LOCAL television, but we also got very good quotes into the NATIONAL media.)

3 - We provided technical assistance which enabled the SMC College Republicans to be become a MAJOR power in their community.
(They did a GREAT job when the President came to the Santa Monica airport last year, but THIS time they distributed seven hundred "Welcome, Back, ARNOLD!" buttons, and conducted an AMAZING pre-event press conference.)

All of our pre-FReep objectives were therefore accomplished -- with FLYING COLORS!
We had intentionally chosen NOT to politicize the events INSIDE Corsair Stadium.
(As it happened, our opponents chose NOT remain non-political inside.)
In retrospect, since it turned out that we were SO successful countering the opposition's disruption on the OUTSIDE, perhaps we could have devoted some of our resources to countering the opposition's disruption INSIDE.
Fortunately, there is ALWAYS a "next time." :o)

Even bad press can be good. I just finshed watching Orielly tonight (I love the way he ticks me off). I guess he must have been really upset with the protestors who interupted Arnold's speech, because he just had the Govenator on and allowed him over 10 minutes (which is a lot of time on TV). Arnold was just handed a golden opportunity to kick off his special election agenda, and did a nice job of explaining the situation.

Isn't it ironic that the liberals tried to shut Arnold down from making a commencement speech, which really wasn't going to be all that political, ticked off Orielly, and created an opportunity for the Gov. to have not just a city forum, not just a state forum, but a national major meida forum?

I have to tape Orielly when he airs again on the rebroadcast in a couple of hours. He just read four letters from his viewers (pros and cons), and his comments and the viewers comments are pure gold.

What was broadcast last night, presenting the thug liberal side at the graduation, appears to have backfired (BIGTIME!) on the thug liberals tonight.

America is a great country, but it wouldn't be if thug liberals take over and hammer everyone's constitutional rights like they tried to do to the Gov. of CA last night.

What always amazes me about the self-proclaimed compassionate, caring, and humanitarian left is how they bend over backwards to be rude and cruel to people. Even if you disagree with someone, it's never an excuse to be mean to them.

You all did a GREAT job. But I'm still upset that the school did nothing to shut down this roguish behavior.

BTW, I get mailings from CA Nurses' union. What a bunch of whiners!!

Thanks Ron.

I feel that CA and NY are hopeless liberal states full of loudmouth, spineless little weasels, oh man!

Au contraire, mon cherie!
Even out here in the land of "fruits and nuts," there is a "red state, blue state" division...
...between the leftist CITIES, and the conservative HEARTLAND of California.

From vote2003.ss.ca.gov:

2003 California Statewide Special Election
Shall Gray Davis be recalled?
