¾ mile average path width (some accounts of 1 mile wide—a record width)

At least it sounds like it's a rare occurence. Still..so hard to imagine.....the destruction must be unbelievable.

Yes, if I remember correctly, the estimates are that this was a one-thousand year occurrence. Some speculate the Tri-State tornado was really several tornadoes.

But the path of destruction was said to be continuous, and the timings of destruction in different towns work out too well for several tornadoes to be likely. It was almost certainly one funnel. At the end of its path, in Indiana, it wasn't wide; it was thin and fast moving. This is usually how tornadoes look when their energy is almost gone.

Tornadoes are fascinating despite their destruction. Weather is relatively mild; tornadoes are astronomical forces unleashed on earth.
