Flash back to 2001 article : The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act -- supported by a majority of those "mean-spirited" Republicans -- for more than 14 hours. He also opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court's two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. In fact, the ex-Klansman had the gall to accuse Justice Thomas of "injecting racism" into the Senate hearings. Meanwhile, author Graham Smith recently discovered another letter Sen. Byrd wrote after he quit the KKK, this time attacking desegregation of the armed forces.

Now if it was a conservative that played that role we both know the Dems wouldn't stop howling until he resigned. C'mon!

Did he play Nathan Bedford Forrest? The two have something in common.

Actually, Forrest founded that organization initially as a harmless fraternal organization for vets. That's why there's all the use of Greek. The problem is, some radicals in the hinterlands who weren't wealthy enough to join the White Leagues realized that there was a potential in it, so they effectively siezed control of the organization. At some point in the late 1860s, Forrest quit in disgust and denounced the violence.

Now, if we want to discuss Forrest as a commander, he was among the best strategic minds we had. I can't remember the name of the place, but they were defending a small town, and they had basically run out of ammunition, and the Union troops were comin' (I think its Forrest), so Forrest comes up with the idea up setting up boxes around the city, and imbedding cannons at certain distances.

When the Union colonel showed up, he thought that he was heading into an Alamo, so he surrendered on spot, only to find out that he had been snookered by the beloved rebels.

I would say former Klansman would be more appropriate than ex-Klansman.

How do we know he is either? Has he ever produced his letter of resignation?
