If Big Quake Hits off Coast, Tsunami Could be Gigantic (Washington, Oregon, California)
The San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 13, 2005 | David Perlman

Posted on 06/14/2005 12:38:57 PM PDT by Strategerist

If a giant magnitude 9 earthquake strikes someday along the coast of the Pacific Northwest, or if, against all odds, an errant asteroid plunges into the ocean many miles off California, a monstrous tsunami could drown low- lying lands all up and down the continent's western edge -- and now a UC Santa Cruz scientist has calculated the sweep of such an event.....

...To model the event's effects, Ward assumes that in a huge quake on the Cascadia subduction zone, the two crustal plates would abruptly slip apart vertically by at least 50 feet in three successive blocks from south to north, generating a 9.2 magnitude quake. Aside from enormous quake damage on land for hundreds of miles, Ward estimates the resulting tsunami would pile a wave more than 20 feet high crashing onto the Oregon-Washington coast, inundating Seattle and the entire Puget Sound region as well as Portland and the mouth of the Columbia River.

Are you on the Oregon Coast?
Or were you being a wise guy?

I live on the Yaquina Bay right where a tsunami would bowl around at.

It takes me in an emergency not dressing King just to get him strapped into his WC with all his flailing and then loaded into the Van (I would not bother to tie the chair down to save time) and drive straight up our hill to safe ground 30-40minutes.

So being just 17 ft above sea level the whole Tsunami idea is something to be prepared for.

We are 3.5 miles from the Ocean Bar in the bay. And it is a small bay.

Link please.

My problem is navigating some of these sites.

I am interested in the Yaquina Bay.
I have a steep hill that is paved that we can go up for safety.

I am 17ft from sea level.

I have had some really cool dreams that the ocean is just up to our fondation and colorful fish and friendly dolphins and whales are swimming in our backyard. And the fishing is fantastic. Perch, Halibut and Salmon galore. What a great fantasy dream that re occurring one is.

According to the map I would have to high tale it to the top of the street which is very steep and quite long.

I am at 17ft from sea level. 3.5 miles on the Yaquina bay right where a tsunami's water would have a bowl effect.

Just paddle out, turn around and raise
That's all there is to the coastline craze
And when you catch a wave you'll be sitting on top of the world

If the sun suddenly exploded it would be a catastrophe. If housecats learned to love water then dogs would be in big trouble. If Yawn (t)Revolta stopped in the middle of the intersection, clipped on a bow tie, took off his shoes, chewed a wad of decent tobacco and had a practice spit, hitched up his trousers, set fire to his hair, inserted a couple of metal skewers into his left palm, and filmed the resulting blood loss... it might not be a pretty sight.

I lived on the top of Lord Hill just south of Snohomishfor about 5 years. We were 500 feet high -- got snow first and it melted last. A Tsunami would never reach us, although flooding on the Snohomish River from the back wash probably would cut us off from town.

It's WHEN a Magntiude 9 quake strikes along the Pacific Northwest. It's just a matter of time. And it may not be that long.

Not a Mag 9, but prescient, aren't you? Wow.

The Weather Channel will scare your pants off. Their regular programming is 'Storm Story', but they break in with tsunami warnings, complete with saying, "if you have a friend on the beach in Southern California, and they have a cell phone, call them and tell them to get off the beach". The map they show has the entire US west coastline in red tsunami warning. I missed the times they gave for possible tsunami reaching land, but I assume it's the same as in the official report.

CH, Don't know if you caught it or not but CA had a 7.0 mag. earthquake off the coast of northern/central CA tonight and a tsunami warning was posted for Orange County (Where I live)! I thought of this post and the chat we had about it and started to laugh. The usgs site has info if you are interested. I was watching the Angels game and the cable station broke in with one of those weather warnings.
