No, I've never been in combat, as women are prohibited from participating, but I proudly served my country anyway. I know that talking about problems doesn't always make it instantly better but this guy knew he was having problems and he should have gotten some help for them sooner, rather taking things to this extreme. No matter how bad my personal problems have been, I've never considered barricading myself in my house and killing my pets.

I think that it is funny you jumped to the conclusion that this Marine killed his own pets. Did you stop to think that maybe the reason he went off was because his pets died/were killed by other than by him? No you just went straight to the jugular calling him a scumbag.
You then whine about the fact that he should have gotten counseling via the military. Since you said that you DID serve, then you should already know that counseling provided by the DOD for Military members is not in any shape or form confidential. Even if you need to vent to someone who wants their dirty laundry gossiped about base? Which it does, the civilian workers who work in the offices and do most of the counseling do not know how to keep their mouths shut.
Who wants to go get help anyways when the second word gets back to your unit that you are going to counseling you are designated Section 8 and will be under the microscope, even getting passed over for promotion because you may have "issues". Your ranting on this Marine is reprehensible. I think that one ought to look in the mirror before labeling others.

I gotta agree with the others on this thread. Obviously the guy's having some issues, and given the probability they're stemming from his tour in Iraq there's great potential for serious psychological trauma to overcome.

Who knows what the pets have to do with it but it doesn't seem like he's torturing animals for fun or anything. Yes animals are nice but they're not people and despite this Marine's problems he's still together enough that nobody got hurt.
