Black History Course Mandated for Philadelphia Schools By Monisha Bansal CNSNews.com Correspondent June 13, 2005
CNSNews.com) - The Philadelphia public school system, citing the fact that blacks encompass two-thirds of its student population, will require all students to take an African-American history course starting in September. But a conservative critic calls the decision divisive and claims Philadelphia parents "are sacrificing their children to a bunch of America-hating black liberals."
Joe Lyons, spokesperson for the School District of Philadelphia, said there has been a public outcry since the 1960s "to include more emphasis on African-American history and culture in our curriculum."
But it wasn't until February of this year that the city's School Reform Commission approved adding the African-American history class requirement.
Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND) told Cybercast News Service that he was "outraged" by the decision. "They need to be learning about this country, because they are American, they are not African. They need to be learning the greatness of America so that they can have a greater appreciation and love of their own country," said Peterson.
"Our children are already suffering with this notion that they are African-Americans. They have been brainwashed to believe they are not full Americans. It will further divide rather than unite. Parents are sacrificing their children to a bunch of America-hating black liberals," Peterson added.
Lyons said the curriculum for the course was developed by Molefi Kete Asante, professor of African-American Studies at Temple University. It begins with African history and extends through the history of African-Americans.
Lyons said "when you look into African history, there are very few textbooks developed, and all of them are at a college level, but we are working on that." The district plans on using the textbook, "The African Odyssey," authored by Michigan State University history professor Darlene Clark Hine.
According to Lyons, the curriculum is being researched to develop more history electives focusing on other minorities.

Not to get off topic but what exactly have the Republicans done to "shut down our borders"?
Not a partisan issue, neither party wants to change the status quo; but for different reasons.
Gotta love Rev. Peterson! Thanks for the ping NewDestiny. BOND seems to be the only group that consistently pops up with reason against this onslaught of madness! It must drive them crazy when every plan of theirs is thwarted by this little group and modest little pastor keep stepping up to the plate. Challenging their hate filled plans.
The REAL Rev. Jesse - 100% correct as usual.
It's a shame that many black Americans insist on being "hyphenated" Americans. The fraud Jesse Jackson only makes this problem worse with his race-baiting.
Thanks for the flag.
The course will use the textbook "The African American Odyssey" by Darline Hine and will start with origins of humanity, classical African civilizations and early African leadership before moving into blacks in colonial America and blacks and the Constitution. Eventually, students will learn about blacks from the Civil War through civil rights and black nationalism.
Maybe the schools should stick with making sure students are able to read by the eleventh or twelfth grade...
There ARE Republicans who want to shut down our borders - Tancredo, Sensenbrenner and others. Unfortuantely, Bush has been hypnotyzed by that Rasputinesque Svengali Carl Rove and he isn't one of them.
NO DemocRats want to shut down our borders - at least none in office. And there they brak ranks with many pf the party members who are also concerned about the Hispanicization of America.
abigail2,Thanks for the ping.
abigail2, how are you doing?? I've been off and on and missing a lot of people!
Rev. Peterson has his head on straight!! Good for him!
Thanks for the ping!
Rev. Peterson ~ Bump!
Salute to Pastor Peterson for calling a spade "a spade".
Hi janetgreen, he puts it so simply and when he says "they should be learning about America"....well, that is so obvious, and so common sensical (word?) but it is shocking to the ear, because no one is saying that! We're so busy defending ourselves! LOL!
Thank you The_Eaglet!
Hi potlatch! Same with me!
That is a good point! LOL! Maybe the course should have to be read...they would never get it.
Molon Labe blackie..
Thanks Easy ENGLISH, of course.
bump
I'd be willing to bet that the only mention of Egypt will be to inform the students that the Egyptians exploited their black southern neighbors by enslaving them.
Given the approach taken to it, 'African history' should be more properly termed 'black African history'. Since Egyptians aren't black, they're not real Africans to these 'historians'.
I don't have a problem with Egyptians being black. I do have a problem with certaint teachers I know personally that try to spin the enslavement of the Jews.
