Memo Seems to Link Annan to Contract of Son's Company By JUDITH MILLER
A memo written by someone who was then an executive of a major contractor in the United Nations oil-for-food program states that he briefly discussed the company's effort to win the contract in late 1998 with Secretary General Kofi Annan and his "entourage" and that the executive was told that "we could count on their support."
The secretary general's son, Kojo Annan, was employed by Cotecna Inspection Services, a Swiss contractor based in Geneva, and the nature of that relationship is among the issues being investigated by a panel appointed by the United Nations and several Congressional committees.
Kofi Annan has said several times that he did not discuss the contract with his son and was not involved in Cotecna's selection. A United Nations panel headed by Paul A. Volcker, a former chairman of the Federal Reserve, concluded in March that Mr. Annan had not influenced the awarding of the $10 million dollar-a-year contract to the company.
But the memo appears to raise questions about the secretary general's role.

Like Capone, Annan will have to be brought down by something as mundane as tax evasion.
Not to worry. Our congressional leaders will be sure these accusations are buried and dismissed to protect their leader Kofi. He's above reproach and walks on water.
THE WHEEL TURNS, HOWEVER SLOWLY!
I can't wait until we get to Benon Sevan's aunt in Cyprus.
All he has to do is promise to no longer share a bed with any oil for food bribers and he's in the clear.
Voelker must have missed that memo.
Cotecna says they had two meeting with Annan before the contract was awarded but the subject never came up.
OK, what did they have the meeting for and what DID they talk about?
This memo incident will probably lead nowhere. Remember the Clinton administration wonk who testified under oath dismissing certain potentially incriminating diary entries that he had previously made by claiming that he had lied to his diary? He testified to that absurdity with a straight face, and suffered no consequences for his perjury. No doubt that will also be the way that this executive will get out from under the difficulties posed by this juicy and potentially incriminating piece of evidence.
Whereas when reporting on something that looks like Republican or military wrongdoing, the impression they give is that they are uncovering just a tiny hole into a massive pit of evil.
