You'll never know the full story. There are so many versions as to what really happened in 1941, ranging from Suvorov's theory that Hitler's attack was an act of desperation and that Stalin had a plan to attack on 6th July 1941 (he wrote three rather convincing books that support this thesis), to Gorodetski's theory which views Stalin as a total idiot who ignored all signs on heaven and hearth (which is by the way also convincing when you read his books). You simply have to do a research and create your own conspiracy theory.:-)

a Hitler strike against the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941 made no military sense whatsoever

What I read was that Hitler wanted Russia's oil. But I read that in 1970.
