1 Thessalonians 5:3
For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.
Imagine how much more effective a Hillary administration could be with this one little law in place...
Oh, statements like that irk the heck outta me.
With that kind of thinking, we will have government cameras watching every aspect of our lives, snooping into all of our private records, monitoring our emails, etc., etc...
...but, we shouldn't mind that if we aren't doing anything wrong, right?
Does privacy mean anything to you?
Oh yeah, I know it is already happening but it will only get worse when Americans give into it.
The problem with that of course is that someone will try to make a case than even opposing a war is treason, and we never want to go there.
He who trades liberty for security deserves neither and will lose both. --Thomas Jefferson.
Could not have said it better. How often have we seen "temporary" and "emergency" measures become permanent and expanded?
You got that right, scares the hell outta me!
For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.
Appropriate.
I agree!
handy old one: The biggest problem is who the government see as a problem.
I find your answer, problematic.
Coloradan: Fighting words are already illegal. What sorts of additional restrictions on free speech do you think would help prosecute the war on terrorism?
Those that incite violence or give aid and comfort to the enemy.
pbrown: I agree. They can't use the freedom of speech as a Trojan horse to whip up anti-American feelings.
Yep! If you have an agenda, put it on the table.
Dan from Michigan: I voted to eliminate it. If we have to live in a police state, the terrorists win.
True, but I think we're still very far away froma police state, and we still have the 2nd Amendment, something I do NOT want tampered with.
Reagandemocrat: I agree with Huck. Pull back.
Corpus interruptus? ;)
Age of Reaon: I got an idea better than the patriot act. How about we stay out of foreign entanglements?
When they leave us alone, OK, but that's tough nowadays.
colorcountry: Yeah, I voted expanded too, which to me meant extended also. I still want it to be temporary (as the need for resticted freedoms is necessary in time of war).
Yeah, only during war, which I wish we'd declare someday...
phoenix_004: Permanent...Threat of islamic terrorism is real and here to stay!!!! We have no option but to defend america and in doing so if we have to forgo some rights then so be it.
I don't see where we're giving up any rights with the P.A. to begin with, unless it were abused, which would be the same with any law/act.
Wrong in who's eyes? George W. Bush's eyes or Hillary Clinton's eyes? Granted an administration as corrupt as the Clintons wouldn't need to justify their actions as per the Patriot Act, but that kind of power in the wrong administration's hands would be frightening.
I voted cut back, for the most part I like the PA, but parts of it don't sit well with me.
They will probably change their minds in 2008.
You weren't a victim of the Patriot act. You were a victim of Political Correctness implemented by liberals trying their hand at national security which by the way happened long before the Patriot Act.
God forbid we offend anyone that actually fits the profile?
I see this as another grab at relieving us of yet more of our rights. Chip off a little bit here, and carve off a tiny slice there, hoping no one will notice what their ultimate end game was till it was too late to do anything about it.
Imagine for a moment that Cynthia McKinney, has the power of the Patriot act in her hands, or Teddy Boy, or Nancy Pelosi, or Conyers, or McDermitt. I could go on and on with those who would destroy this country and hand it to the leftist, as they themselves are. It makes my blood run cold to think of the world my children and grandchildren would inherit at their hands.
Most of our elected officials could probably be bought if the right price was offered to them. I don't want something with the power of the Patriot Act in their grasp. To safeguard ourselves, the Patriot act must die. Nothing should be so intrusive into our privacy.
If they want to protect us, let them start with shutting our borders down. Let them use racial profiling as a tool in this WOT. They can have their wire taps and surveillance cameras on those who they suspect are our enemies, with a warrant or subpoena. Law abiding American citizen are not their enemy and should not be treated as such.
A government cannot have carte Blache over it's citizens. If they do, it's a police state and not a free nation.
"Wrong in who's eyes? George W. Bush's eyes or Hillary Clinton's eyes? Granted an administration as corrupt as the Clintons wouldn't need to justify their actions as per the Patriot Act, but that kind of power in the wrong administration's hands would be frightening."
Exactly. Most people don't see long-term. The Patriot Act and other laws will be around for a long time, so that means when the Democrats take over once again, and they will, no one stays in power forever. They will have the power of the Patriot Act to do with it what they want. Who do they see as a terrorist and a danger to America? Ask yourself that before you agree to a law. Don't just support a law just because your person is in the Oval Office or running Congress.
I agree the act should be permanent, but if this thing you wrote were true, there would be nobody getting shafted by the Feds over the Endangered Species Act, wetlands or the Americans with Disabilities Act.
I want a complete definition of "terrorist" before I go along with this.
If you are a Democrat in power: Anyone who opposes the government.
If you are a Democrat not in power: Anyone who fails to oppose the government.
The Republican definitions are similar...
