I always get a kick out of that "cultural superiority" argument these Souvrn'rs mount when they think they are onto something.

First of all, it's not true that Yankees falsely thought their culture to be superior ~ on the other hand, they thought their MORAL values to be superior to those of your typical Souvrn'r.

But more important, Souvrn'rs who shared in those anti-slavery Moral Values had had to flee, nearly as penniless refugees, to the Free States of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the decades before the Civil War.

There was no counterpart flight of any Yankees to the Souf'.

The difference in the two regions of the country regarding Moral Values was pretty much identical to what we saw for 50 years between East Germany and the free society in West Germany. No one fled East!

African-Americans who shared in Yankee anti-slavery Moral Values also put their lives on the line to flee to the North, or even all the way to Canada.

Many of us still cherish the memories of ancestors who took the trouble to violate the Runaway Slave Acts to help these brave people escape to freedom. Heaven has their convictions on display for all to see.

There is no counterpart to this in Souvrn' Moral Culture.
