Makes one wonder how many other rock stars were geniuses had they not fried their brains with drugs...

Brian May of Queen was *this* close to finishing a Doctorate in Infrared Astronomy from Imperial College (London) when Queen hit "big time." I *think* he recently finished his studies so people would stop asking about it, but I could be mistaken. Roger Taylor (the drummer) was a first year Dental student and John Deacon was an accomplished EE who designed May's treble boosting preamp.

The "canonical" answer is the guy from Boston (Tom Scholtz?) who invented the Rockman amp and was a graduate of MIT.

I haven't hit the big time, so I don't make the list (although I do play a mean six string on Sunday mornings).

Mr. Baxter left the group in 1979 after a long tour in support of its most popular album, "Minute by Minute."

My understanding is that he left the group because he recognized "Minute by Minute" and the Michael McDonald Doobies as the drivel that it was and wanted no part of it.
