That I'm aware of. Started out as a political organization, not to mention that some Jews were in it, and ended up as a Nazi-style white nationalist bunch. Both were bad, but the 1920 one was much worse.

Not really. The Klan's origin is a little obscure, but General Nathan Bedford Forrest is generally credited with organizing the Klan together with other organizations into a effective political force. Who came up with the white robes and hoods no one seems to know, but since "Birth of a Nation" it's hard to imagine anything else since then. The Klan was organized to end the oppression of whites and negroes by the Freedmen's Bureau and its stooges, the Loyalty Leagues, the Scalywags and Carpetbaggers. The original Klan's objective was to end violence, not to add to it, and to end the flagrant corruption that was bleeding the South to death. The Negroes were being re-enslaved by the very people claiming to be their liberators. The Klan saved the Negroes as well as the whites.

How much violence was committed by the original Klan would be impossible to estimate. The Klan kept no records. It is reasonable to assume, however, that these first members were not gulity of very much if any, almost certainly no wanton violence. They were ex-Confederate soldiers, led by ex-Confederate officers, public spirited men used to positions of command and trained in the disiplines of leadership. Besides, they could see that their methods were effective without the use of force. It is believed that the original Klan lasted less than three years and disbanded when it accomplished its objective. The trouble was that other men with less lofty objectives, seeing how effective such techniques could be, got together in gangs and set out for personal gain and revenge. The outrages charged to the Ku Klux Klan could have been commited by anybody for any purpose, or not committed at all. The organization that got going in the 1920's and called itself the Ku Klux Klan had not the remotest connection with the original KKK.
