Biden: US will 'have to face' military draft dilemma

The United States will "have to face" a painful dilemma on restoring the military draft as rising casualties result in persistent shortfalls in US army recruitment, a top US senator warned. Joseph Biden, the top Democrat of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the prediction after new data released by the Pentagon showed the US Army failing to meet its recruitment targets for four straight months.

"We're going to have to face that question," Biden said on NBC's "Meet the Press" television show when asked if it was realistic to expect restoration of the draft.

"The truth of the matter is, it is going to become a subject, if, in fact, there's a 40 percent shortfall in recruitment. It's just a reality," he said.

The comment came after the Department of Defense announced Friday the army had missed its recruiting goal for May by 1,661 recruits, or 75 percent. Similar losses have been reported by army officials every month since February.

With MSM and Demos telling the world how bad it is that we are at war no wonder we have a short fall.

It is quite ironic that the Democrats always rant about how the Bush admin. is going to re-establish the draft, YET it is the Dems themselves who are always bringing the issue to the table.

Gee, I thought it was Bush who was going to call for the draft?

I don't expect to see any of these college students who were screaming about that to complain about this, for some reason.

Hey Joe, if there was an across-the-board base pay increase of 40% for our military, I bet they'd be turning people away by the thousands. You Dems always insist on throwing money at problems, why not throw money at this one??

This will be interesting: let's put the Dems on the side of calling for a draft.

Actually, it would be very smart for the Dems to run to the right of whatever GOP candidate runs in 2008 on the WOT and illegal immigration. But, of course, they won't figure that out, and NO Dem pres. candidate could possibly run on "restoring the draft."

'But experts said even that figure was misleading because the army has quietly lowered its May recruitment target from 8,050 to 6,700 people.

That has prompted charges that the real shortfall was closer to 40 percent, which in turn has led to questions about the future viability of the army as a force, if it continues to be plagued by lack of new recruits.'

Not to mention their deliberate attempts to smearing our troops (and country) every chance they get. Truly sad state of affairs.

I think the Pubs should use this against the demonRATS in the next few election cycles. Vote demonRAT - Get drafted.

If they gain enough congresscritters they could shove it through - just for spite.

If the Dems regain control of Congress in 2006, the draft is inevitable.

Induct all of the illegal aliens in to the US Military for a period of 4 years. Since there are supposed to be 11 - 13 million of them, and assuming that 35% of them are fit enough to serve, the problem would be solved.

Think about another angle. Joe is getting his face time for a possible presidential run. Biden or Hillary? Who would be a tougher opponent?

Make it a main requirement to receive American citizenship. The military will take care of them learning english.

Biden should be careful what he wishes for. In a draft even the Democrats are fair game. Don't want to lose any more voters there Joe do ya?

The military had steadily increased bonuses for Army enlistments and they are still falling short. The Air Force and the Navy pay their recruits the same as the Army and the Marines and they're turning people away. Money doesn't seem to be the reason. Maybe it's the fear of getting their ass blown off in Iraq that's the reason?

It would certainly solve some of the ills that we currently have in this country.
