The dog barked for no apparent reason at that time. Is it possible he detected the earthquake at this distance?

They are different. Some roll, some jolt. others vibrate. But one thing is consistant with big ones is the sound. The sound is the best surround sound THX you have ever heard.

Never been in an earthquake. Does the ground move sideways? Up and down? Or does it feel like bobbing around on a boat? All of the above.
Imagine riding in a car, truck, or whatever, on a really bumpy road. That's one type.
The other type, is kind of like you are "rolling" or "rocking" back and forth.
Sometimes it depends how far you are from the epicenter.

What do yall do while it happens?
Do you just be still and see how big its going to be and hope its small? Or do you go outside so that things dont fall on you?
Just wondering, here in Tx we run to the closet for tornado warnings.

That was cool.
Hearing epicenter about 6 mi south of Palm Springs. Woke me up.

At 5.5 things like the silverware on the table start making their own noise, and it is time for me to exit the building! As I normally go for living in the country, I'm yet to be hit by a piece of sky falling. Not to mention living in Alaska for forty years, and riding out the '64' quake.

This quake is not that far from the San Andreas Fault that runs through the Coachella Valley. That part of the San Andreas is way overdue for a big shaker.
