LONDON - British troops on Sunday arrested a group of Iraqi insurgents suspected of carrying out separate roadside bombings that killed two British soldiers, the Ministry of Defense said.
Troops from the military's Staffordshire regiment made the arrests during dawn raids in Al Marjarr Al Kabira, in southern Iraq, a Ministry of Defense spokesman said.
The spokesman said "less than five suspects" were detained by troops, who also recovered 130 detonators and other bomb-making equipment.
"Those targeted were suspected of being involved in recent attacks that claimed the lives of two U.K. soldiers, Guardsman Wakefield and Lance Cpl. Brackenbury, in May 2005," the defense spokesman said on condition of anonymity, according to government policy.
Anthony John Wakefield, 24, was killed May 2 in a blast in the southern Iraqi city of Al Amarah.
Alan Brackenbury, 21, died from injuries suffered in a roadside bomb attack in the same region May 29. Four other British soldiers were wounded in that blast.
The ministry spokesman said all of those arrested are believed to be Iraqis.
Since Iraq is under a state of emergency, how about classifying bomb-making as a capital offense? The people caught with explosive residue are executed. The building where bomb materials are found is razed.
