The National Ledger ^ | 6/11/2005 | Robert Novak

WASHINGTON - President Bush's statement Wednesday to Republican congressional leaders acknowledging that he should do a better job handling immigration followed a report to him by aides that the conservative base is deeply concerned about that issue.

Republican House members returning from the Memorial Day recess last week told the White House that their constituents are most concerned about two issues: fiscal responsibility and immigration. In both parties, elite leadership does not appreciate rank-and-file worries about the flood of immigrants and government aid to them.

Don't "misunderestimate" your base, Mr. President.

Is President Bush Waking Up on Illegal Immigration?

I doubt it. He's probably just hitting the snooze button for the 100th time. If he ever does wake up to the problem, we'll know it when we turn on the news and see him apologizing to the "vigilantes."

Maybe someone could slip Ronald Reagans policy on illegals and cracking down on businesses that hired them to GW. RR knew the problem was going to become dangerous. Well here we are. HEY GW, ILLEGALS ARE NOT A GOOD THING.

Plus it is not COMPASSIONATE to aid the Messico Governments poicy of sending the poorest of the poor to another country to prop up their stupid Gov. (sending billions back) BTW Mr. President, does it bother you that the $$$$ that is leaving the U.S. could be circulating in OUR economy. I thought you had an MBA.

That quote was taken out of context.

You mean granting amnesty? I thought you were opposed to that.

Nope, Reagan gave amnesty to those that havd been here for years as long as they were going to go thru the immigration process. That was the tradeoff to institue the crack down on businesses that hire illegals. But ofcourse as soon as the Dums got back in power the enforcement stopped. It has been illegal to hire illegals since Reagan was in office. Not many know that. (unless I missed some midnight change in the law by DUMs) Reagan was ABSOLUTELY against illegal aliens working in the U.S.

Bush won't get serious until his approval hits the 30's.

Oh yes...I am opposed to amnesty. But I understood Reagans reasoning. If memory serves I think there was some sort of time frame for eligibility also.

As I understood it Reagan pushed for a very limited amnesty but by the time congress got done with it there were all kinds of add ons and extentions.

I suspect that if the immigration problem don't get fixed soon the GOP is going down the tube again. Its a shame.

And .. the NRCC is sending out questionnaires asking about the issue and if we like the President's plan - I said NO!

And another question was - should we spend more on border patrol - I said yes!

Reagan worked on it, and we got Clinton. The GOP is NOT the problem. it is the backbone of people that will stand up and say NO MORE illegals. KEEP our money in the U.S.

In 2006, these idiots will crawl out from under their rocks and do their usual conservative song-and-dance.

Conservatives are to the GOP as blacks are to the Democrats.

I beg to differ. That quote was Not taken out of context. I can probably find the archive of video where he said it in context. I like Bush. He is blinded by his experiences of youth and class of friends he keeps.

Actually not, but thank you for trying to push that urban legend.

More important is Dean’s unimpressive fundraising relative to his Republican adversaries. As of April 30, the RNC had raised $44.7 million this year to the DNC’s $20.9 million. RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman has $30.1 million in cash to play with as he works to expand the GOP base ahead of the 2006 election, whereas Dean will have to do the same thing with only $7.4 million and a foot wedged tightly in his mouth. And even before Dean’s latest round of stupid remarks, three top Democratic fundraisers had already quit.
