Food for Thought
Fox News ^ | 6/8/2005 | Neil Cavuto

I guess being a tad overweight myself, something caught my attention leaving Washington this morning.

I was coming back from my big interview with President Bush — did I mention that I interviewed the president? Anyway, I was on line to get a cup of tea at one of those airport stands and a few people ahead of me was a woman trying to decide what to order.

She was fairly heavy herself. OK, maybe I'm being kind — she was quite heavy. And don't a couple of guys in back of me knew it.

They started grumbling about how she's holding up the line — which she really wasn't.

As she tried to decide what to order, one of them snapped, clearly within earshot, "Put down the donut, fatso."

The other guy piped up, something like, "Hey toots, think coffee... black... no cream… no sugar."

They laughed. She clearly heard them and she got flustered.

I swear, her eyes filled up. She left the line without getting anything.

I turned around and looked at these imbeciles, just shaking my head.

They gave me a look as if to say, "What the hell are you looking at?"

Neil is one of the bright stars of Fox News Channel. He is well informed, thoughtful and a great interviewer. He is likely reacting to the insensitivity of others and how a nasty event in a line can ruin the feelings he had following his interview with the President.

We all get impatient waiting in lines. Doesn't matter if somebody if overweight (I am guilty of that one these days), black, white or purple. Rude behavior is unacceptable in public. These two jerks probably said something many have thought. But I also don't go around telling Sihks something about their turban or a smoker to put it out because it is killing both the smoker and anybody around, even though I may have thought it. Fat people deserve respect the same as anybody else. That means you don't say things behind somebody's back you wouldn't say directly to or about your wife, daughter or mother.

Yeah, Cavuto is a great anchor, and he's making a good point here. There just isn't any reason to disrespect and abuse someone like that, regardless of how big they are.

the point is about what they call "fatism" in that comments about weight and even looks do not garner the same kind of criticism and reactions as racist or other hateful comments, I mean when was the last time you heard some say, Hey alkie, put down that beer go for the pop, or Hey wrinkled puss, put down the cigarette, it's making you look old and ugly or Hey stupid, drop the joint, you don't want to kill anymore brain cells or Hey anorexic, eat a burger or something, OK, they probably do say the last one from time to time

my own philosophy is assholes like that who make those kind of comments about perfect strangers obviously have some pretty severe insecurity issues about themselves because people who are confident in themselves do not feel the need to hurt others in that fashion, belittle others in order to make themselves feel good

well they say the worst anti smokers are former smokers

I by the way don't have a problem with smokers so long as they don't blow it directly in my face.....

It's also attributed to Orson Welles...something like "I can lose weight tomorrow but you'll always be stupid."

According to liberal bigots, it is ok to make fun of all manner of people who might be conservative and republican--e.g--Southerners, white males, blonde-haired women, people who watch car racing, Black conservatives, hispanic conservatives, etc. The tolerance of liberals is a force to be reckoned with.

Just as long as she leaves your sense of justice and humour alone. :)

I think my husband feels the same way about me as she does about you.

I do not disagree with you a bit.

My point is, why is this newsworthy? There are assholes out there in the world. We get em beginning in the second grade, and put up with em in our adult lives. There are always people who say mean, hurtful inconsiderate, racist things.

If people have a foolproof way of getting kids through childhood and into adulthood without encountering these people, or even being one of them, I sure would like to hear it. Most normal people who have been the victim of some kind of unkindness in this way would never visit it on someone else.

The problem is not that these people are abnormal, the problem is they are mostly normal. They are just jerks. They are like rats, cockroaches and mosquitoes. They bite, annoy and suck, but there you have it.

Drive on any highway. There are jerks everywhere acting as if they cannot wreck. Everyone is in a hurry without regard for anyone but their own selfish self. There are more and more people who need attitude adjustment and others who need anger management as a result of being exposed to jerks.

I think his point might be that fat people are the only ones we can safely make fun of nowadays.

Yep.

Their remarks are further evidence of the coarsening of society.

...On the other hand, they do ALSO show what happens when we have socialized (nationalized) medicine. Obesity is very expensive when it comes to Medicare dollars; when "we" pay for others' health services, they don't pay the true cost and therefore don't pay attention to the long term health concerns & fiscal effects.

This makes the subsidizers (taxpayers) angry.

If they paid their own way, tied cost-to-choice, and paid higher insurance while eating heavy-calorie foods, no one would care - or make nasty comments...

I don't think this is "normal" behavior. Yes, it's behavior that we've all seen, but I wouldn't call it normal, and it certainly is not acceptable (at least where I come from).

Do you really think that these morons have enough brain cells to contemplate the cost of obesity to the taxpayers in a semi-socialized medicine society? I DON'T THINK SO!

I don't think I was clear...this is clearly not normal, but it is common. I used normal as a synonym for common amongst a subset of people, that was imprecise of me.
