Dick Wadhams (President... err... Senator Allen's Lee Atwater for 2008)
Slate ^ | June 10, 2005 | Alexandra Starr

[SNIP]

Can Wadhams take Allen from a little-known senator to a spot on the national ticket? It's a gamble, for sure: Even some Republicans snicker at Allen's tendency to turn every thought into a football metaphor (primaries are "intersquad scrimmages"; Senate recess is "halftime"). Questions about whether Allen is smart enough to be president are sure to dog a potential bid. And Wadhams has never run a national campaign before—or for that matter, a campaign outside a red state. The Republican presidential primary will be crowded, which means that his reflexive go-negative strategy could be risky: Voters who are turned off by the mudslinger as well as the mud will have other options to choose among.

Still, Allen's amiable charm fits the mold that Wadhams has succeeded with before. The Virginian may not be a policy wonk, but his lack of pretension will likely resonate with the conservative voters who matter in primaries. Last month, Allen earned kudos from the right when he lambasted the Senate filibuster deal on judicial nominations, saying that two scuttled nominees, William Myers III and Henry Saad, had "been accorded a nice wake having been thrown overboard at sea." And he won chits when he oversaw the Republicans' pick up of four U.S. Senate seats last year, as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Let's not forget what happened the last time a GOP consultant who'd rolled up state-level victories signed up with an underestimated candidate.

This argument that Wadhams has only won in Red States is a Red Herring, because:

1) All Allen has to do to win is hold all of Bush's states Bush held in 2000, and go after a couple of light blue and purple states.

2) Wadhams ran some campaigns like Allard and Conrad where his candidates weren't very strong.

Allen/Owens 2008!

Allen/Owens 2008!

Neither one is known outside of their own states. They are going to need an awful lot of exposure! If they weren't mentioned once in a while on Free Republic - I wouldn't even recognize them.

Democraps have tried the "not smart enough" charge with every Republican candidate since Ford...people don't listen to that garbage anymore

I like Allen as well

They are going to need an awful lot of exposure!

After Wadhams helped Thune to rid the country of Daschle, I'd never venture to bet against Wadhams. It's beginning to look a lot like an Allen ticket in 2008.

"Neither one is known outside of their own states. They are going to need an awful lot of exposure! "

Jesus Holy Christ - Do you think ANYONE outside Arkansas knew who Bill Clinton was in 1989, or Jimmy Carter in 1973 or Howard Dean in 2001?

You get exposure and name ID AFTER you win the Primaries you do NOT need it beforehand.

Many people will remember George Allen Jr. from his father, a Hall of Fame football coach and CBS football commentator. Also, it is an easy name to remember. "Jimmy Carter" "George Bush" "Bill Clinton" "John Kennedy". It is a lot easier to get elected with a name that fits nicely on a bumper sticker compared to "Dukakis" "Deukmajian" etc.

Who the heck is Owens?

Allen is next door in VA and well known to me. I especially like his stance on illegal immigration - very against. He could be the man to secure our borders, and if so I'll vote for him on that basis alone.

I'd prefer that Condi Rice run fpr VP, or POTUS with Allen as VP to defuse a Hitlery run. Either way, it's all good.

That quote there just secured him the nomination and the general election.

Owens is back with the wife, and I think Beauprez will hold onto the Governor's mansion in 2006.

Wadhams is really good. Unfortunately, the Dems have been running all over us since he left Colorado.

Governor Bill Owens of Colorado.

Rice won't be picked because Allen will be battling "Bush fatigue", and her pro abort, pro Affirmative action, complete lack of experience, and open borders statements will keep Allen from taking her as VEEP.

The VEEP will be a conservative Guv, either Owens, Sanford in Carolina, or Pawlenty in Minnesota.

I agree. Owens' star has fallen here. He failed to carry a water initiative he strongly supported, and p.o.'d the West Slope. He dropped support for Shaffer and backed Pete Coors, who lost a Senate seat to Salazar. He allied with Dems in the legislature to design an initiative to weaken TABOR and raise taxes, which will go on the ballot this fall.

Owens' support from his home state would be lukewarm.

I will stand behind whomever wins the primary. I think the field will be verrrrrrrrrrrry crowded! On both sides actually. It should be very interesting!

"He dropped support for Shaffer and backed Pete Coors, who lost a Senate seat to Salazar."

Allen and Rove HATED Schaffer too, even when he was the only declared candidate.

If you remember, Allen and Rove begged all the major candidates in CO to run from Senate like Beuaprez, McCinnis, Coffman and they all turned them down.

The National Party and Rove would have made sure COors won the primary no matter what Owens did.

Frankly at the time Coors looked good on paper, Coors was well known throughout the state, his family had contributed money to all sorts of charities in Colorado.

As for the rest, I think Owens just had bad luck.
