The Burmese government imposed more restrictions on the access of internet from yesterday morning.

"Almost all of the sites, including the one I am using are banned and nobody is getting access", said a Rangoon resident.

The Bagan Cybertech, the main internet service provider, however, announced that it was because of "internet backbone down".

But many do not believe the reason given by Bagan Cybertech.

"It is just to make sure the all websites are blocked and the traffic is filtered," a user said.

Only the ISP owned by Myanmar Post and Telecommunication is now running.

With the purge of former prime minister Khin Nyunt, his son Ye Naing Win, who was heading Bagan Cybertech, has been arrested while the control of the company has reportedly been taken over by the army.

Recently, over 100 employees of the company were fired without assigning any reason.

The military junta had installed a new Firewall few months ago, to filter the websites of independent overseas news and pro-democracy groups.

However, some news sites and dissident websites, including Mizzima were accessible to surfers inside Burma till June 4. See Mizzima report on May 27 entitled “ No more Ban on Mizzima website in Burma” read http://www.mizzima.com/mizzima/archives/news-in-2005/News-in-May/26-May-05-49.htm.

Meanwhile, an announcement from Bagan Cybertech in the first week of June asked customers using broadband connection to pay hundred percent more as monthly charges. The new charges have been fixed at 35 FEC ( Foreign Exchange Currency).

The start cost of internet connection in Burma is more than US $ 1300 per connection.
