Senator Sam Brownback has put a hold on the White House's nomination of a prominent abortion-rights supporter to a diplomatic post.
The Kansas Republican, a strong abortion opponent, says he has concerns about Julie Finley's nomination as ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Brownback is chairman of the Helsinki Commission, an independent U.S. government agency that formulates policy for the diplomatic organization.
Finley is a longtime Bush supporter and Republican fundraiser, and also a founding member of the WISH list, a political action committee that raises money for female Republican candidates who support abortion rights.
A spokesman says Brownback is meeting with Finley Thursday to discuss her nomination. Finley is not commenting.
Well, it'll all settle out in time. And who cares what the Posties think anyway? Let 'em rage, rage against the dying of their publishing light.
Wapo is hopping mad, huh? It's funny how they're all of a sudden now angry at the idea of a qualified nominee being blocked due to a litmus test on abortion. Where was all that outrage at the judicial filibusters.
Hypocrites.
I wonder if the WAPO got upset when Boxer put a hold on Bolton, and if they are mad that the dems are blackmailing the White House over Bolton's nomination?
I am on Brownback's side---there are too many women that are probably just as qualified, that would be pro-life, I betcha....
So this chick is right up there with the Log Cabinites, a subversive operative dedicated to attacking one of the core tenets of conservatism and the Republican Party.
Abortion is murder. It's not your body. It's the baby's. Supporters of infanticide should not be allowed to hold any form of employment. Mad yet? Tough!
Actually, though I'm pro-life, I believe if the senator has a problem with the nominee, then he should vote against her, but I don't believe it's right for one senator, or a group of senators, to take it upon themselves to block other senators from being able to vote for or against a nominee.
WISH, I covered them in my blog last November.
proud of my senator
Question for you Mr. Righteous, you are on a sinking ship and can save only one life. One is a fertilized egg in a petri dish, the other is a living breathing adult (or child) human (your child or wife maybe). Who would you choose? Are they both equal?
Do you support first term abortion in cases of rape and incest? Bush and most Republicans do. What about that innocent life? Does that make them supporters of infanticide? Please reply.
I agree. Blocking votes legitimizes the other side. Just vote.
Many times, the hook on the nomination is secret, or the Senator balking is eventually known. Here you have a Senator publically saying that he is the one who needs to be satisfied that the person will conform to the foreign policy of our elected government, and not go off on their own causes. And he's meeting her today, face to face. Makes the WaPost look even worse.
