Go spend some time in New Mexico. Especially Albuquerque. It is a very strange and byzantine place. Old old families going back generations control everything. Extremely corrupt pols with deep deep cover. The populace has no idea what is actually going on.

Not surprising. As some posters on other threads pointed out, this is the most ridiculously amateurish way to go about getting a whistle-blower to shut up. You beat the hell out of a guy and leave him half dead with the warning to "Keep your f***ing mouth shut", of course he's going to tell the police everything he knows and beg them for protection.
