Lifetime award for Star Wars man
George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars movies, is to receive a lifetime achievement award on Thursday from the American Film Institute.
Director Steven Spielberg will present the prestigious honour at a gala ceremony in Los Angeles.
Star Wars actors Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford will pay tribute to the film-maker alongside previous recipient Tom Hanks.
Last year's winner of the AFI's highest award was the actress Meryl Streep.
"George Lucas is a master storyteller, but he is first and foremost a moving image pioneer," said Sir Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI's Board of Trustees.
Inspiration
"He has advanced the art of the moving image like few others, and in the process has inspired a new generation of film-makers around the world.
Lucas said he felt honoured to be recognised for "doing what I love to do".
"I'm proud to be counted among such an extraordinary group of people whose lives are dedicated to the art of making movies," he said.
The AFI Life Achievement Award was established in February 1973.
Other recipients include Robert De Niro, Barbra Streisand and Clint Eastwood.
***Now that's a cheap shot. He does indeed deserve it. ***
Hey, he's done a lot to technically move filmmaking forward - but his characters are wooden and insipid. Some of the dialogue was utterly laughable, "Hold me Anni, hold my like you did beside the lake on Naboo..." - Come on! You gotta admit that's funny!
***Without "Star Wars: A New Hope," it is unlikely that any of the Star Trek movies would have been made,***
And that would be a bad thing???
:)
Then you should know that GL has mostly shunned Hollywood, he's more of an independent.
Well I was too. I was damned glad the Empire and the Sith won. The Jedi turned out to be a bunch pathologically lying mystical wizards that cannot deal in absolutes.
GO EMPIRE !
Okay, ya got me there. I did like spiderman tho...
This dialogue is actually better than what is in the movie. No joke.
How so? Hamill, Ford, Fisher, Daniels, and others were given percentage point$ on the profits of the Star Wars Trilogy.
Lucas, in short, made millionaires out of the lot of them.
Mark Hamill is doing what he enjoys now, acting (granted, a lot of B Movies, but...), being with his family, doing voice overs, character voice work, and traveling quite literally the world over to Conventions.
Trust me, as far as Hamill is concerned, he has nothing to curse Lucas for.
I should be so lucky to have it as well.
AMEN CBS.
Oh, the money meant more.
