What would be wrong with empowering local law enforcement to assist federal law immigration law enforcement?

Nothing would be wrong, in fact it should be federal law to require it. The problem isn't that LEOs don't have authority, it is that local governments have passed "safe haven" laws that prohibit LEOs from asking or taking action on felony immigration violations.
