The Rinos have a lot to lose too. Much of their money comes from private donations but some comes from the RNC and the RNC won't hesitate to find replacements to support if they share more in common with the party majority. Some of the Rinos can't be replaced because there is no base for anyone else so we just have to get what we can and when can from them.

The candidates in so far are Pastor and former Detroit City Councilmember Keith Butler, Spence's wife Jane Abraham, and Bart Baron. Secretary of State Terri Land might run.
Keith Butler is an excellent speaker with strong core support in some black and evangelical circles. He was the only known Republican to win in Detroit(43% to council) since WWII. He'd be an interesting candidate and would make the race impossible to predict.
Terri Land won statewide in 2002 in her race to replace Candice Miller as Secretary of State. She's done a good job there and would be a good candidate.
Bart Baron is a two time party switcher. GOP-Dem-GOP again. He ran against GOP'er Joe Knollenberg twice and lost. Jane Abraham is Spence Abraham's wife.
I'm voting for who I think has the best chance to win. Right now that is Keith Butler.

Hello,
Me too! To date, he has impressed me no end, and while it is early for 2008 picks, it is not THAT early (if you know what I mean!)
Glad to be here, MOgirl

"Some of the Rinos can't be replaced because there is no base for anyone else so we just have to get what we can and when can from them." Yeah, well Chafee is probably as good as it gets with regard to RI, however ME is not THAT liberal and I'm pretty sure that we could find at least one reasonable candidate out there (at least somebody like Lisa Murkowski).

Quite true.
My office, though, is normally VERY silent on political matters. Not a whisper, even during the election. For her to react that way told me which side of the fence she sits on (as if I didn't already suspect.) :-)

The democrats will hand Allen baggage, ethical or otherwise.
I haven't bought into the ethics charges. If you're a Republican, you'll be charged with everything and in most cases it seems to work.

No debate. There was no objection so they went straight to an up and down vote...

I gather these two weren't being filibustered; they were blue-slipped, and Levin and Stabenow withdrew the hold.

I always hope there is a good replacement for a Rino but I don't hold my breathe on it.
