Porn and Politics

The annual President's Dinner, a Republican Party fundraising event featuring President Bush, could get an extra dash of spice this year with porn actress and former California gubernatorial candidate Mary Carey planning to attend. The porn industry and Republicans may seem like strange bedfellows, but Ms. Carey said she sees Tuesday night's dinner as a good opportunity to learn more about their policies and do some networking. She plans to run for lieutenant governor of California as an independent next year. Ms. Carey acknowledges that some people just think of her as a busty blonde who does porn films.

“I also have a brain and political aspirations,” said Ms. Carey, whose priorities include legalizing gay marriage.

Carl Forti, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is co-hosting the dinner, had no qualms about Ms. Carey and her boss, adult film executive Mark Kulkis, attending.

“Their money was donated to the NRCC. The NRCC's job is to elect Republicans. We'll take that money and use it to elect more Republicans,” Mr. Forti said.

Ms. Carey was one of 135 candidates on the California ballot to replace Gray Davis in the 2003 recall election. Voters picked another actor — Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Mr. Kulkis, a self-described “Schwarzenegger Republican” who is fiscally conservative and socially liberal, was invited to the dinner by the NRCC and paid $5,000 for his and Ms. Carey's plates.

Ms. Carey and Mr. Kulkis said they want to prove stereotypes of porn workers wrong.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

Not the first article I have seen about this porn star and her support of Bush. IMO, Bush's people should politely and firmly tell her that she is welcome to give money but not sit at the table with Bush, that her values are not the values the Republican party aspires for.

Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.

Note: It almost sounds as though she and the guy with her are doing this as a publicity thing to sully the President.

I don't go to these porn/anti-porn threads much, but when I do, I am always dismayed that nobody ever attempts (or even links to) a thorough and incisive social and moral criticism of pornography.

If they've done it, I haven't seen it. And please reference me to it, somebody, because I'd like to read a good critique.

The legality of porn, the regulation or restriction of porn, etc, are important issues --- but they're not the only issues. Even if we all agreed that porn should be restricted (or even if we all agreed that it shouldn't) we would still need to discuss what effect porn has on people's souls, on their hearts and minds, on their relationships, their marriages, their children, and on society at large.

But even if we were ALL the sort of libertarian that insists, on principle, that no form of communication should be regulated by the government, I think it would be humanly useful to understand, on a social and psychological level, what porn does to people. And to think of what we can do--- not as advocates of government action, but as advocates of OUR OWN action --- to curb the destructive effects of porn.

Anyone?

Porn, like any form of hyper materialism kills souls. People who "worship" material freedoms worship a pagan god.

Thorough and incisive are beyond me, I'm afraid, but in short, porn rots you from the inside out.

I don't like the way the concept of addiction is bandied about these days, but a person who habitually indulges in porn is living in the Earl of Hell's watchpocket.

Now, Lord, please open my eyes to my own sins.

Is porn always destructive?

But you on the other hand lead a perfectly sinless life though...

The President would be ill-advised to sit with her. He dare not give even the appearance of a tacit endorsement to an industry, such as it is, which so many of his countrymen find objectionable.

Its a private fundraiser affair right. Even JC sat with sinners. Remember Matthew the tax collector?

We're not in the 19th century, where a political leader could be a "missionary" to sinners (like Gladstone was) and not be thought ill of.

Mrs. Don-o,

Searched using "pornography, psychiatry and Catholic" yielded this:

http://www.moralityinmedia.org/index.htm?pornsEffects.htm

Dr. Judith Reisman is a leading expert on Kinsey and wrote eloquently on his methods and pseudoscience (a series of major works in the Wanderer; she has her own website, I think). I'd start here for a reasoned discussion on the issues you wish to see broached. A search of her work is a treasure trove of the ill effects of porn and the false premises used to make it seem innocent.

Oh, so in your world no one is allowed to hold any moral values? IOW, it's moral relativism all the way?

So I can't say, gosh, maybe a whore and her pimp shouldn't be sitting with the President of the United States because sometimes I eat too much chocolate cake?

In that case, what business do you have to criticize me? Unless you're leading a sinless life, of course. You're saying I can't criticize her and her pimp, but you can criticize me. I detect a hint of hypocrisy here.

Jesus Christ didn't take their money and tell them that they were okay. You never read some of his blasts? He soundly criticized all kinds of people, including his own disicples - some for being hypocrites, as well as sinners of all description.

He never told sinful people (i.e., everyone) that they were fine just as they were.

I agree with what the other posters have said

Sex desire is like a fire - and just as fire can cook food or heat the house, or burn the house down and destroy whole city blocks, sex can bond married couples, and create children, or destroy peoples' lives.

Pornography turns people - mostly women, but often children and then there's "gay" porn - into orifices. Habitual porn users degrade themselves, and their relationships with others are harmed, and anyone who wants to pretend it's not so - well, one wonders why they support something so patently wrong.
