3 Children Shut in Car Trunk (Maryland)
The Washington Post ^ | June 8, 2005 | Nelson Hernandez

Thurmont police Sgt. Shawn Tyler said he could barely believe his eyes: Before him, at a Frederick County shopping mall, a woman was helping three young children into the trunk of her car.

Two boys -- one the woman's 9-year-old son and the other an 8-year-old friend -- hopped into the trunk of the teal Volvo 850 on their own, according to court documents charging Lanora Adele Lucas with three counts of reckless endangerment. The 3-year-old, Lucas's daughter, came last, set inside by Lucas, the officer said. With that, she drove off southward.

...

"Yes, you did," Tyler replied.

"I don't think so," Lucas said.

"What about the three children you have in the trunk of your car?" Tyler asked.

As soon as Tyler spoke, Lucas "began to visibly shake," Tyler said in an interview yesterday. "She knew she was in trouble."

Tyler said he ordered Lucas to open the trunk. Inside were three children Tyler described as looking "terrified." The 3-year-old was soaked with sweat, wearing nothing but a diaper.

What? What exactly is your point? How is this anywhere close to the National Enquirer?

Because of the danger of airbags and side impact crashes, the trunk is probably the safest place for children.

What about a "rear ender"?

OK, who's remembering the annoying yellow triangles from the 80s that said, Baby on Board. And then of course, the "Dead motherin law in trunk." "Ex-wife in trunk."

Right about then, I was a baby lawyer, and I was appointed to represent two children in probate court. Their mother's husband, their step-father, had been charged with murdering their mother. I talked to his defense attorney who couldn't wait to tell me this story and I will now share it with you lovely freepers.

He was driving through town when he was pulled over for expired tags. Usually, this brings a warning ticket and you go on your way. This time, however, when the cop ran his plates, it was discovered that there were warrants out for parking tickets. He had to follow the cop to the police station to pay the tickets which he did. He then went back out to his car. A Saab.... and he couldn't get it started. The battery was dead. The cops in the motor pool, right next to where he was parked, offered to jump him battery. LOL Can you see where this was leading? He refused, insisted he would get a tow and then started to walk quickly away.... the cops, being suspicious, popped the trunk and you guessed it, found his dead wife with her skull bashed in. Moral to the story? Pay those parking tickets.
