A Guatemalan man who was shot in the foot crossing the U.S. border from Mexico turned up seeking treatment at a Framingham emergency room Monday.
A spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the man could be a victim of smuggler vs. smuggler violence.
``As far as cross-border violence, it's something we're concerned about,'' said spokesman Marc Raimondi. ``Since 9/11, we've clamped down on the border, but that has made the competition among the coyotes greater.''
``Coyotes'' are those who smuggle illegal immigrants over the Mexican border, Raimondi said. The illegal immigrants are known as ``chickens,'' he said.
``The chickens are taking the brunt of the violence that is happening,'' Raimondi said.
MetroWest Medical Center employees called police Mondayat 10:16 p.m. to report a man had come in with a gunshot wound to his foot, Police Chief Steven Carl said.
Carl said the man, whom he would not name, told investigators he was shot as he crossed the border into the United States.

The USA is doomed...
Is he sure about this?
``Since 9/11, we've clamped down on the border...''
This is such a lie. And how did the man get all the way to Massachusetts before seeking medical attention? And how do these poor, poor, so poor people come up with thousands of dollars to be smuggled in here? They should treat him, take him to Logan and fly him back to Managua TODAY.
This has got to end.
" The USA is doomed "
S.O.S...S.S. America ...S.O.S....off Jersey coast ...S.O.S...
Seriously - I don't know how the man can say they've clamped down on the border since 9/11 with a straight face. Unless he's thinking of the Minutemen and their successful project, his statement is just ludicrous on its face.
He was probably safer at the border than from his fellow illegals in downtown Framingham.
