Sounds stupid. The last time a hurricane came through the gulf last summer, a few rigs shut down for a few days. Even if they were all wiped out, we could open up the strategic reserve for a few weeks, while oil goes up to say 80 bucks a barrel. In the end, we would get all the oil we needed because we can afford to pay for it more than others can. Not an end of the world as we know it scenario.
As it turns out, it wasn't an end of the world scenario...but it did cause a lot of grief for a lot of people for about a year.
I'm sure that my brief description hardly did the film justice so I recommend you see it for yourself before making a judgement.
A hurricane in the Gulf that did that much damage would probably destroy New Orleans, reroute the Mississippi River thus destroying gas pipelines, in turn shutting down the Northeast power grid. I don't think the demand for oil would be at the same level after the destruction considering how big a chunk would be taken out of the economy.
Hurricane Ivan was rough, but it was no Camille
If a Camille style hurricane came thru rig territory today, it would cause major problems.
I saw the promos for the movie, so I knew I didn't want to see it.
$7.00 a gallon gasoline is unrealistic, and because the movie had a fake plot, not worth time of day.
And the fact is, we have enough oil in this country, probably is, the environmentalists won't let us operate at capacity, and they have forced alot of viable wells to be capped.
