the Arab societies were quite modern.
"Jihadis" would say "apostate". Reaction was inevitable. A lot of the hatred of the West come from having come and studied at western universities. Regardless of why the current growth of jihad, the fact remains that it is written in the books.

Most religions have moved past all the things that are written in the books. The Muslims, up to about the 1960s had done the same -- then the oil wealth showed up, and viola, look at what is written in the books became new again. And the tyrants who were in charge found willing accomplices in the mullahs who wanted their share of wealth and power.
Convenient. As deep throat said, follow the money.
