The United States Immigration Act of 1924, also known as the National Origins Act or the Johnson-Reed Act, limited the number of immigrants who could be admitted from any country to 2% of the number of person from that country who were already living in the United States in 1890 according to the census of 1890. It superseded the 1921 Emergency Quota Act. The law was aimed at further restricting the Southern and Eastern Europeans who had begun to enter the country in large numbers beginning in the 1890s, as well as East Asians and Asian Indians, who were prohibited from immigrating entirely. It set no limits on immigration from Latin America.
As an example of its effect, in the ten years following 1900 about 200,000 Italians immigrated every year. With the imposition of the 1924 quota, only 4,000 per year were allowed. At the same time, the annual quota for Germany was over 57,000. 86% of the 165,000 permitted entries were from the British Isles, France, Germany, and other Northern European countries.
The quotas remained in place with minor alterations until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.
I agree with that, except make it 10 years. I guess we are both going to be labeled as racists, though.
You think calling for a moratorium on all immigration will preclude you from being called a racist!? Guess again!
Spare me your leftist doctrines.
How is that racist? It's not if it's done a rational manner. Unfortunately, ignoring the problem of illegal immigration have made a lot of discussion about this issue, irrational in general. I tend to stay away from threads like this now because the discussion usually does get racial.
Sometimes I feel like I am in the twilight zone. Blink, blink, blink, blink .....
Not necessarily. I think the government's refusal to deal with this issue has made the topic pretty heated and almost impossible to discuss. Besides some people make it racial when it doesn't have to be.
What's your problem? You come to this thread with your guns blazing for no apparent reason, really.
What gives?
It will only get worse as the North American Union continues to be imposed.
I agree :( That's why I am for making my local police de facto immigration authorities.
IMO, we need to restrict numbers in order to maintain our standard of living.
One of the reasons we're losing our culture is because immigrants are no longer assimilating like they did years ago. They're encouraged to speak their own languages instead of English...and we cater to them by providing multi-lingual forms, multi-lingual street signs, multi-lingual this....multi-lingual that.
As a matter of fact, somebody from CA posted a couple of weeks ago..."learn Spanish!...it won't kill you!" WHAT kind of upside down thinking is that???
If immigrants want to have benefit of all this wonderful country affords them.......it's incumbant on THEM to AMERICANIZE themselves! And, that includes learning ENGLISH.
I hope you look for racism in pro-illegal posters with the same zeal. Ive come across a few of them on FR that seem to want to pad their races numbers, seems just as racist as the opposite to me.
I know the suspects. freepmail incoming...
Now its our racism that created the Azltan racists? Sounds like the "why do they hate us?" 911 bullcrap. A solid majority of Mexicans believe they have the right to come illegaly because the southwest really belongs to mexico. Thats where Alztlan racists get their ideas.
Actually all we need to do is secure the border. The politicians love to give you the impression that it's an intractable problem, but it's far from it. They just like things the way they are, that's all.
You don't want anyone other than Nordic types here. You shoot me, I shoot you, sounds good. We could never get along and discuss things could we. I know, I not bright enough. Well back to my leaf blower now.
Well youre a bit of a psycho. Youve never seen nore will you see me post about "evil" mexicans. In fact maybe you should look at yourself. You seem more than happy to shoot your fellow American citizens.
It wasn't forgotten; Senator Ted Kennedy, not yet famous for his skill at swimming. wrote the Immigration Act of 1965 that replaced it.
No, that's only part of the solution. Crucifying, and I mean crucifying employers of illegal aliens is another.
Then there's the issue of deporting all illegals who are here. Locking down the border doesn't address this.
