Actually Rome didn't fall from debauchery. It fell to Turkish cannon, and the Janissaries, Muslim children of captive Crusaders.

The Turks were imported from central asia to fight for Romans. The AngloSaxons were imported to fight for the Romanized Celts. The Franks a German tribe imported to fight for the Gaullic Celts, and eventually took over.

So long as we fight for ourselves, we have a chance. Of course today, we may build fighting robots, with the Star Wars-y risks of that path.

Good to see someone else remembers the history right.

On 9/14/2001, singing the Troparion of the Holy Cross, I had a feeling what the hymn must have felt like when sung in Constantinople during all the long years when the Empire was under constant threat: "O God save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting to {believing KIngs]* victory over all their enemies, and by Thy Cross preserve Thine estate."

*It is now sung in a democatized version with "Thy people" substituted for "believing Kings".
