FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A man who has 14 previous DWI convictions in other states has been arrested for DWI in Farmington.

Jones Manheimer, who is in his 60s, was released from the San Juan County Detention Center Wednesday after Magistrate James Atcitty reduced an initial $100,000 bond to $5,000.

District Attorney Lyndy Bennett says he will try to have the higher bond reinstated. The case has been bound over to district court. It has not been assigned to a judge.

Bennett said Manheimer is both a flight risk and danger to the community. Public Defender Raymond Archambeau says his client is in poor health and is not a risk.

According to court documents, Manheimer was convicted of four DWIs between 1972 and 1979 in Arizona. He received 10 more convictions in Utah from 1971 and 1994.

I can't believe any judge would let someone off so lightly on their 15th DWI. The irony of it all is that the Magistrate Judge who reduced his bail, is a Navajo Indian. He knows how big a problem DWI's are in NM. I think we have the most DWI related deaths in the whole country, and this clown lets this guy go.

He hasn't had one in eleven years. According to the pre-MADD laws, this would be his first. At least in Ohio.

I think NM counts them all, due to the high DWI death related accidents. We have a huge population of Native Americans, and alcohol abuse with them is very high.

pre-MADD laws...

What do you mean by this. What is a MADD law? MADD was in Ohio more than 20 years ago, btw.

Take his car away and bring him a gallon of whiskey every day. Soon the problem will be solved.

MADD has pushed for a law stating that DUI's "last forever", i.e if you got one seven years ago, another one tomorrow would be your second. I thought it had passed....apparently not:

The penalties for being convicted of DUI can be quite severe. The severity of your penalties depends upon the number of DUI convictions within the past five years. The following chart outlines the possible penalties.

So according to Ohio law, this would have been his first.
