Out of the Shadows
Why the Deep Throat disclosures are good for the media—and could help Hillary Clinton shape a bid for the White House
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Eleanor Clift
Newsweek
Updated: 4:50 p.m. ET June 3, 2005

June 3 - At a Memorial Day picnic in Washington, the talk inevitably turned to Hillary Clinton and her likely run for president. “What motivates her?” one man wanted to know. He wouldn’t think of asking that question about any of the male contenders for president. Wanting to hold the highest elective office in the land is a given for them, but not for Hillary. She has a unique hurdle to overcome in reassuring voters about her motives and character as she moves toward a national race.

The more serious question for Democrats is whether she can win. She has three years to neutralize the irrational hatred that too many voters feel toward her. Part of it is sexism, the same impulse that stereotypes her as a pushy, uppity woman. Part of it is the way she got into politics, through her husband. Her years as First Lady left her with a public image that for today’s politics seems too liberal, too shrill and too cold.

The real Hillary isn’t any of those things, but how else to explain the antipathy toward her even among those who consider themselves admirers? “What Red State can she win?” asks another picnicker. The answer—Arkansas—elicits laughter. But it’s not unreasonable to expect a residue of loyalty to Hillary in a state where she lived in the governor’s mansion for 12 years, and maybe she could pocket Florida, too. Hillary likes to remind voters of her Republican roots as a Goldwater Girl and president of the Young Republicans at Wellesley...

I've got my doubts she could win Arkansas.

Hey Eleanor, we'll watch what she does and you watch what she says.
Can you spell L-I-B-E-R-A-L?

I love to watch the McLaughlin report, for the simple joy of watching the look of utter astonishment on Tony Blankley's face whenever Clift is off on one of her shrill "Excuse Me.....please.." screeds. The director must have noticed it a while back, for now, every time she starts to speak..we get a shot of Tony's face... the only thing it's comparable to is when you look down at your shoe and realize that youu've stepped in dog ca-ca..

Eleanor Twit sure lives in a fantasy world, doesn't she? Hitlery is motivated by one thing - power over us, the unwashed, ungrateful masses.

Yes, she does. She's almost like the elderly aunt at family dinners that always says something crazy and everyone politely ignores it.

One of the few good things about Eleanor is that you don't have to append "Barf Alert" to the title, everyone knows.

Hillary likes to remind voters of her Republican roots as a Goldwater Girl and president of the Young Republicans at Wellesley...

BWHAHAHAHA! Yeah, that'll fly. Let her try that line south of the Mason-Dixon line. Eleanor is even stupider than I thought. But if they think they have a winning strategy here, by all means...

Funny, I thought that male candidates, or men thinking of running for President, have been asked that question for decades.

"She has three years to neutralize the irrational hatred that too many voters feel toward her."

This is a typical mindset of the left in general and Ellenor in particular,i.e., if you don't like Hillary you hate her. Nothing in between.

But the fact of the matter is that Hillary's real problem is people like me that certainly don't hate Hillary, but don't trust her at all. Hillary's reputation for surrounding herself with pathalogical liars like Sid Bluementhal and Lanny Davis is her real and biggest problem. You are know by the company you keep, Visious Sid was her fair haired boy and those associations are what will continue to alienate voters.

Eleanor has never heard of Margaret Thatcher, or the plethora of other conservative women throughout history.

Is just so much easier for her to play the sexism card.

Eleanor knows damn well that in 1980 Rodger Mudd then a news correspondent at CBS asked that same question of Democratic Candidate For President Theodore Kennedy. When all Kennedy could do was stumble out some incoherent words it was said that doomed his challenge of Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination for President.

Eleanor Clift lies becuase she thinks the "people" are stupid and she is bright. Her problem is she has that backwards.
