Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez on Friday laid down a battle line for upcoming state budget talks, saying legislative Democrats will hold out for a budget that spends $3 billion more than Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed for education.
"We will not leave the negotiating table and we will not sign on to a budget until and unless we fully protect (education) funding because doing less than that would be doing a disservice," Núñez said.
The Assembly's top Democrat joined two statewide officeholders and Sacramento Assemblyman Dave Jones at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School, where Jones' daughter is a student, to criticize Schwarzenegger's proposed education budget and spending control initiative.
The news conference, held in the Sacramento school's library as sixth-graders watched, was one of several that Democrats have held or plan to hold throughout budget negotiations.
"We present a united front to take on the governor and paint a more hopeful vision for California," said Treasurer Phil Angelides, a Democrat running for governor who supports legislative Democrats' proposal to raise taxes for the state's top earners to help finance education funding increases. "We will not retreat, we will not stand down."
Schwarzenegger's $115.7 billion budget proposal would increase school funding over the current fiscal year.

I hope they ( the California liberal Democrats ) keep it up. They will change Ca. from a Blue to a Red State. Even the Liberals will understand that we are being invaded.
