Until a few years ago, the money that immigrants sent back home every month was only their business. But remittances around the world now total more than $126 billion, according to the World Bank. So it's become an issue for economists, governments and politicians.

"Wow, $126B is a big number." Perhaps one of our resident FOQNA loons would like to have a go at explaining this one away...

Please read posts 70 and 80.

"I deeply resent the anti-immigrant tone of many of the posts here..."

And we deeply resent the pro-illegal alien tone of various posters around here.

The immigrants get it and then it is gone.

This statement may apply to the 20-50 billion in remittances sent out of the country. It does not apply to the rest of the immigrants earnings.

I will note our 500-650 billion annual trade deficit, most of which is incurred by citizens as additional funds to which your statement may apply.

The worse thing I have ever done was to vote for Bush a second time.

So a president Kerry would have made things better ? Or do you think Pat Buchanan or Tancredo had a serious chance at winning ?

That's just the money they save by having us pay for their medical, education, housing, and other "welfare" demanded from taxpayers, for "Doing the jobs that Americans won't do" and "Doing work that not even blacks will do."

"How are these options only open to certain folks? Clearly, it is possible to live in this country on the wages paid to them -- they're willing to make the sacrifices. If others are not willing, then may the best man win. Otherwise, are you suggesting the government step in and allocate jobs in some sorta lottery? Not in my America"

You're right. This isn't your America! If you think Americans are going to live like that, here, you're nuts! (Probably a foreigner to boot) We'll have a tea party long before then, throwing out politicians, illegals, and all those nasty govt. regs. that are ruining MY America.

No, but my own conscience would not be killing me now. I voted for the man - George Bush - who will destroy America as we have known it with wild spending here and abroad, and forcing Americans to pay for the health care and schooling of every human being on the planet. No Democrat, as lousy as they are, could have hurt this country in so little time as Bush has. And I regret that I voted for any other Republican, as they are all worthless.

I'd like to see it given back to the American citizens who have been sucked dry paying for the illegals health care, schools and housing and on and on.....

i doubt that's going to happen.

the policies of the u.s. government are much different than the personal views expressed here.

i'd like to see a law that requires everyone in the u.s., legal or illegal, to puchase health insurance of their choice.

the competition would lower health care costs.

also, i'd like to see people who use emergency rooms for routine health care fined.

I'm not an economist, but that doesn't stop me from spewing statistics like a steam-powered caliope....so, rough terms, $1B = 10,000 jobs, so guestimate might be close to 1.26M jobs.......

This is the very reason Mexico's Fox doesn't want to "fix" the illegal situation. Why try to fix Mexico's disaster of an economy when this kind of money flows in?

That's money drained out of our economy

How do you figured it's "drained"?

Those pesky foreigners can do 3 things with the dollars they get, spend them, save them or eat them. Please explain why any or all of these is bad for America.

My mind says that US dollars EVENTUALLY have to be spent here.......

You are correct. These dollars are like checks we write to pay these immigrants. If they come back here and are spent, hurray!!! If they never come back here then we got their services and they never cashed the check, hurray!!!

Before complaining about the 126 B drained from our economy, consider the tax benefit to the United States Treasury. I'm guessing that we collected a hefty, ah, umm, uhhhhhh...well, okay, maybe not that much.

Anything?

They could take these billions and buy up US stocks and bonds and eventually own the businesses that make the profits that make the US go.

Name the resort.

La Costa Resort & Spa
http://www.lacosta.com/

JMO, you can't, it's a made up story, to whip up hyperbolic emotions.

Dane, in this instance your opinion is wrong. True story. I was there. The same story applied to the restaurant and janitorial staff at this resort. Every few months INS came through and green-carded and gave all the illegals a free bus ride home. The same ones made their way back to the hotel within a week and were re-hired. This was the late 1960's and the resort ownership had ties to organized crime. Maybe it's changed since then, but I have no knowledge of that.

Pride in the USA, sorry about this. I know I told you FR could be a tough place sometimes. I hope you won't take it personally.

How is it that they can afford to live on the low wages that you protest? How is it they can afford to live here, work here, eat here, send part of that measly wage out-of-country and you can't?

Because they live stacked 6 to 8 deep in apartments, drive uninsured cars, have their kids educated for free, their medical taken care of by the county, etc. etc.

"clearly we were paying too much before. "

What's youre job and where do you live so I can send some illegals your way? I bet I can find an illegal to do your job for half the price.

So this is bad? Why? Won't those foreign owners still have to pay taxes on US profits? Still have to pay US workers? Why is this bad again?

So this is bad?

Yes it is. GW Bush is right. This is the ownership society. The best way to make more while working less is to own the capital that makes this country go. The less stock you own, the worse off you are. There is no hope for you if you don't understand that.
