Who should really be apologizing for this mess? Dell, or IBM?

the truth hurts. not pc to speak it.

on the surface the salesperson has a valid argument -- i'd be curious what percentage of a $ spent on a dell ends up offshores.

Whether true or not, Dell's policy is wise.

It is bad form to trash your competition to your potential clients. You may gain a little in the short-term, but at the sacrifice of your own long-term image.

"As you know Lenovo is a Chinese government-owned company that recently purchased IBM's desktop business," Xinhua quoted the e-mail as saying. "While the U.S. government has given its stamp of approval to continue to purchase these units, people must understand that every dollar clients spent on these IBM systems is directly supporting/funding the Chinese government."

Can't get anymore true than that. I think it is paramount to treason if any government official buys a Lenovo product. Red China sees us as their enemy, they see democracy as their enemy. It is no secret in China what the mission of Communism is. So why should we be buying their products?

I question why my government approved of IBM selling their notebook business to the ChiComs.

"We are strongly committed to growth in China," Menchaca said, "as demonstrated by our investments in manufacturing, design, procurement, operations and business located there."

Why can't Dell be strongly committed to creating more manufacturing jobs here in the US of A? Or at the very least in a country that shares our Democratic principles? That statement is almost as offensive to me as the email was to a bunch of Commie bastards.

Also, buying from Dell is also buying from the Commies in many cases. Lots of Dell's systems are made by CMs such as Foxconn (Hon Hai), Flextronics and MiTAC, in factories located in the PRC. The Commies pocket a percentage, and the workers there pocket the intellectual property. Stuff being made today by US companies there is inevitably reverse engineered. It's pretty hard to find consumer PCs not made in the PRC these days. Pretty much the same deal for any PCs or servers under about 3 thou in price. They're mostly made in the PRC.
