Should only the "protected classes" have access to adequate insurance through their employer?

Of course.

The rest of us might be wiser to accept straight salary or wages, buy catastrophic, take care of ourselves, and save the money.

However, you have access to public insurance, so your question is a non-issue anyway.

Get a life or at least a second job.
