Suspicious package found again in Hollywood after Bomb Scare (Los Angeles, CA - 7/10/05)

LOS ANGELES, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- A suspicious package found near a Greyhound bus station in Hollywood prompted an evacuation Saturday night and was the second suspicious item discovered near a local public transit facility within 10 hours, police here said.

Someone called police at some 8:15 p.m. and reported seeing an unattended green plastic box with duct tape wrapped around it nearor inside the bus station just north of Hollywood Boulevard, said a spokeswoman of the LAPD's Hollywood station.

The bus station and businesses along a block of nearby Hollywood Boulevard were evacuated, she said. A bomb squad was notified, she said. It was the second suspicious package to be found at a mass transit facility Saturday.

Earlier a cooler with wires sticking out of it similar to those used in blasting fuses was found in the afternoon by a police officer on patrol at the Metro Red Line station in Hollywood, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. John Baylis.

FBI Suspicious of Inactive Navy Reservist's Allegedly Forged Documents, Travel Habits (Texas - 7/11/05)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to determine why an inactive member of the Navy Reserve allegedly forged travel documents and was en route to tour various Moslem countries. A complaint was filed in the District Court against David Evan De Boer for theft of government property and false statement.

The Texan is accused of forging military documents to take military flights at the government's expense from San Antonio, Texas to Japan. According to court documents, Boer took military flights from San Antonio to Travis Air Force Base in California, onto Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, to Guam, and then to Yokota, Japan. Security forces questioned Boer in Japan and found him in possession of a list of names and contact numbers in various Moslem countries....

Authorities Clean up Radioactive Debris after Crash (VA - 7/11/05)

Marty Gordon, WFNR WYTHEVILLE, Va. (AP) _ An accident involving a tractor-trailer carrying radioactive debris shut down part of Interstate 81 in Wythe County for a time yesterday.

Virginia State Police say the truck overturned near Rural Retreat, dumping dirt and other items onto the roadway.

Explosion Kills 17 in Northern Russian Shopping Centre (7/11/05)

MOSCOW (AFX) - At least 17 people have been killed in a blast in a shopping centre in the northern Russian city of Ukhta, the emergency situations ministry told said.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the blast.

'An explosion whose cause is unknown took place at 1.58 pm Moscow time in a shopping centre housed in a two-storey brick building,' a ministry spokesman said by telephone. Another 30 people have been rescued from a subsequent fire in the building, the spokesman said.

Ukhta, which has a population of about 100,000, is in the oil-rich Komi region of Russia, about 1,200 kilometres northeast of Moscow....

20 Wounded in Explosion at Turkish Tourist Town (7/10/05)

Jul 10, 2005, 16:51 GMT Ankara - Twenty people were wounded, one seriously, on Sunday after an explosion in the main square of the Aegean tourist resort town of Cesme, the Anadolu news agency reported.

The explosion appeared to have been caused by a bomb placed in a rubbish bin near a bank in the main square of Cesme, the report said...
