PM calls Netanyahu after explosion under his London hotel

By Moti Bassok

Shortly after the first explosion in London yesterday morning, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was scheduled to give a speech in the British capital, to inquire about his well-being and that of his entourage.

Netanyahu arrived in London on Wednesday night and was due to give a lecture yesterday morning to hundreds of businessmen about investments in Israel. Shortly before he was supposed to leave for the lecture, Netanyahu was informed by British security officials that a blast had occurred at Liverpool Street tube station, just under the hotel at which he is staying.

The lecture was canceled and Netanyahu was asked to remain in his hotel.

Later yesterday, the finance minister worked on finding a way to keep the numerous appointments scheduled for his trip. He is slated to meet with businessmen, leading financial journalists and potential investors for the World Bank.

Netanyahu also called his British counterpart, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, and expressed his condolences to the British public. "If there is anyone who understands what you are going through, it is Israel," Netanyahu told Brown.

"They want to break us, but they won't succeed," Brown replied.
