Mexican Authorities Detain Two Iraqis Near U.S. Border on Immigration Charges (6/29/05)

The Associated Press Published: Jun 29, 2005

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican agents in the border city of Tecate captured two Iraqis who had hoped to sneak into U.S. territory without proper documentation, federal authorities said Wednesday.

******Samir and Munir Yousif Shana told investigators they were contacted by a person in their hometown of Baghdad, who said he could smuggle them into San Diego,********* where members of their family already live, according to a statement from the federal attorney general's office.

Federal agents arrested the pair, along with two accused Mexican people smugglers and a youngster on Tuesday in the Paso de Aguila district of Tecate, 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Tijuana on the westernmost stretch of the Mexico-U.S. border.

Many undocumented Iraqi nationals have been captured in Mexican territory en route to the U.S. border. None have had any links to terrorism.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office said Wednesday that both Yousif Shanas were facing "absolutely nothing more than charges of being unable to prove they were in Mexican territory legally."

The Iraqis said they met the accused smugglers in Tijuana, then accompanied them by bus to Tecate. The group was walking toward the U.S.-Mexico line at the time of the arrests, the statement said.
