Jordan Frees Spiritual Mentor of Qaeda's Zarqawi
Suleiman al-Khalidi (Reuters):

A Muslim cleric who molded the militant Islamic views of al-Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, sworn foe of U.S. forces in Iraq, has been freed from prison in Jordan, Islamist and security sources said Monday. Issam al-Barqawi, better known as Sheikh Abu Mohammad al-Maqdisi, 43, was released on June 28 after a six-month detention following his acquittal at a trial of Jordanian and Saudi sympathizers of al-Qaeda. "Maqdisi now has an ability to move more freely and reach out to his followers. This could pose a security risk and galvanize fundamentalists, especially since Zarqawi remains at large," said one official. Both Maqdisi and Zarqawi were freed by the Jordanians in 1999 under a general amnesty issued by King Abdullah.

"US TOLD TO LEAVE CENTRAL ASIA"
SBS (AU) ^ | 06JUL05 | SBS

Posted on 07/05/2005 11:49:21 PM PDT by familyop

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Leaders of a six-nation security bloc led by Beijing and Moscow called for a deadline to be set for the withdrawal of US forces from bases in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

The presidents of the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which comprises Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and China, signed a declaration calling for deadlines to be set on the closure of airbases used by US forces in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

"Considering that the active phase of the military anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan has finished, member states... consider it essential that the relevant participants in the anti-terrorist coalition set deadlines on the temporary use" of bases in the SCO area, the declaration read.

The two main coalition bases, one at Karshi-Khanabad in Uzbekistan, the other at Manas in Kyrgyzstan, have each been used to support US-led operations in Afghanistan since 2001.

Germany also has a few hundred military personnel, most of them engineering and medical staff, at a separate base in Uzbekistan, Termez, while a few hundred French forces work from Tajikistan's main airport in Dushanbe.

The declaration also included a call for "non-interference in the internal afairs of sovereign states," seemingly a swipe at growing Western influence in Central Asia, which Moscow has long considered its sphere of influence.

Analysts see the declaration as a blow to US moves to set up a security line across Central Asia to protect vital oil interests and create a barrier against growing terrorism in the region."

Russia will equip Iranian Submarines with Missiles
India-Defence ^

Posted on 07/06/2005 12:08:22 AM PDT by Srirangan

Quoting a report from the Second International Naval Show (IMDS-2005) in St. Petersburg.

Moreover, Kommersant found out that Rosoboronexport is negotiating with Iran about repair and modernization of Iranian submarines. Iran has three submarines of Project 877EKM that were supplied by Russia in 1992 (Russian name of the sub B-219, Iranian—901 Tareq), in June 1993 (B-224, 902 Noor) and in November 1996 (B-175, 903 Yunes). It was expected that all the major components that already exceeded their life expectancy will be replaced. Also, the new anti-ship missile complex Club-S with the target distance of 200 km will be installed on these subs. The refurbishing of each sub would be done under the contract which costs anywhere from $80 to $90 million. Originally it was expected that the refurbishing will be done in Zvezdochka Co (Severo-Dvinsk) but Admiralty Shipyards are also fighting for the contract.

Al Qaeda’s Fitna
The jihad on Muslims.

By Rita Katz & Josh Devon

Al Qaeda and its components now appear to have fully embraced
a strategy that before they had only toyed with — directing attacks
against fellow Muslims in the course of the terrorist group's jihad.
We have seen al Qaeda kill hundreds of Muslims in its pursuit of
wreaking havoc on the world before, such as in 1998's east
Africa-embassy bombings, and more recently in last year's
bombings in Turkey and in Saudi Arabia. Now al Qaeda and its
affiliate groups are openly attacking Muslim targets, as last
weekend's bombings in Iraq at the headquarters of the Patriotic
Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic party
demonstrate. Muslims, in al Qaeda's eyes, are no longer a
protected class.

Islam distinguishes between an external war between Muslims and
non-Muslims and an internal war among Muslims in concept and in
name, giving the latter conflict an entirely separate word in Arabic,
fitna. As fitna is heavily discouraged in Islam, an Islamic terrorist
group carrying out attacks against fellow Muslims is likely to cause
some confusion for al Qaeda's potential and current followers. Since
al Qaeda's existence depends on public support, the terrorist group
must rationalize why it is waging this fitna and why Muslims are
being targeted.

Previously, al Qaeda's rhetoric in justifying attacks in which Muslims
were killed was to maintain that they were casualties in the pursuit
of a greater cause, and that any Muslim killed in such an attack
would become a martyr and therefore go to heaven. However,
Muslims now are no longer collateral damage but instead the actual
targets, a tactic no doubt very puzzling to many Muslims. To
compensate for this dissonance, al Qaeda has promptly shifted its
rhetoric to address this issue.

In its tradition of masquerading as an Islamic authority, al Qaeda
has begun to brand Muslims working with anti-al Qaeda interests as
traitors to Islam. An influential al Qaeda-affiliated bulletin board
published a piece at the end of January, entitled "A warning to the
mujahadeen fighting in Iraq, with regard to the spy Mahmoud Kul
Aghasi, Abu Al-Qaqa." The posting is designed to be helpful to those
terrorists fighting in Iraq in determining if spies are among them
and working against them. The letter is signed, "The Informational
Bureau for Aiding the Iraqi people, the Center for Mujahideen
Services."

As is typical of al Qaeda's rhetoric, the letter begins by defining
words it wishes to appropriate in a jihadist context and provides an
introduction to "treason," as well as how to deal with traitors and
spies. The author emphasizes that spies are even more dangerous
than "infidels," because spies destruct Islamic society from within.
The posting then proceeds to tell the story of two spies who caused
great harm to the mujahadeen.

One of the spies, Abu Al-Qaqa, named in the title of the posting, is
described as a Kurd of Syrian origin, invoking the Kurds who were
murdered on February 1 in the twin suicide attacks in Iraq. After
studying in the Sharia College at the University of Damascus, Abu
Al-Qaqa, we learn, went on to the army and served under Asef
Shawkat, a prominent security figure in Syria, and has been a
subordinate to him ever since, serving the Syrian intelligence
apparatus.

The letter maintains that after the "blessed 9/11 events," Abu
Al-Qaqa exploited the occupation of Afghanistan and the general
anti-American atmosphere, and claimed that he had just returned
from fighting in Afghanistan after the downfall of Kabul. He
presented himself as a "Jihadi Salafi," and would show films
glorifying Osama bin Laden and the fighters in Afghanistan and
Chechnya, and lecture about jihad and the love of death. He thereby
managed to assemble a group of followers, which he also trained
with weapons, but was all the while working for the Syrian security
apparatus. He passed the names of his followers on to the Syrians,
resulting in "the arrest of hundreds of ardent, sincere young
people." The letter notes significantly that Abu Al-Qaqa also led to
the arrest of mujahadeen passing through Syria on their way to fight
in Iraq. The mujahadeen would come in order to meet him,
whereupon "Allah's enemy would not tarry, and would rush to tell on
them and have them arrested."

While no group has yet claimed official responsibility for the attacks,
it seems likely that the Kurdish political parties targeted in these
recent strikes were attacked for their affiliation with the United
States (which would therefore make them traitorous by al Qaeda's
standards). The terrorist group is issuing a disturbing ultimatum to
Muslims around the world; namely, to cease any efforts to help or
work with those who are dismantling al Qaeda, upon penalty of
death. At the end of the biography of Abu Al-Qaqa is a fatwa
justifying his murder as a traitor. The letter then demands, "we call
upon our mujahadeen brothers in Syria, in general, and spread
throughout our dear Iraq, in particular, to take care of this heretic
and to slaughter him as they would slaughter a sheep."

Muslim support in the war on terror is indispensable and necessary.
Only Muslims are capable of religiously delegitimizing al Qaeda and
its activities, and now the war has spread to attack them
specifically. As a result of this new strategy of terrorist groups, and
in order to maintain our partnership in the war on terror with
Muslims around the globe, we must offer further protection to our
allies and not allow them to be intimidated. Al Qaeda demonizes
America and the West and threatens Muslims who wish to achieve
change without resorting to terrorism. We need to provide
reassurance and incentives to Muslims affirming that nonviolent
reform will ultimately lead to a more peaceful existence for
everyone.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Security company Sophos has seen a dramatic rise in the number of viruses, worms and Trojan horses this year as more organized criminals turn to cybercrime.

The company reported last week that it had detected 7,944 new pieces of such malware in the first six months of this year--almost 60 percent more than the same time last year.

The biggest growth was in Trojan horses, programs that can damage a user's files, steal information, or even create a backdoor that can be used to compromise a PC."

Insurgents Target Iraqi Progress

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 5, 2005 – Insurgents in Iraq attack any sign of progress because "progress is their enemy," DoD officials said today.

Pentagon spokesman Larry Di Rita said today the insurgents in Iraq have something " much bleaker and much darker' than the country's democratic future in mind. Photo by Helene C. Stikkel (Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.
Officials spoke about terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's claim to have kidnapped Ihab al-Sherif, the chief of Egypt's mission in Iraq. "If it is true that al Qaeda has snatched this diplomat, I think it suggests ... that al Qaeda has targeted those countries that are trying to cooperate in the success of Iraq's emerging democracy," Pentagon spokesman Larry Di Rita said during a press conference today.

A group calling itself the Foundation for Holy War in Mesopotamia took credit for the kidnapping via an Internet posting. U.S. officials could not authenticate the claim. The terrorists claim to be affiliated with Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq group.

Officials in Baghdad said that insurgents attack any sign of progress the Iraqi government makes. "It's an insurgency that does not have Iraq's democratic future in mind," Di Rita said. "It has something much bleaker and much darker (in mind)."

In addition to the kidnapping, insurgents reportedly attacked diplomats from Bahrain and Pakistan in Baghdad today. The insurgents see the presence of Middle Eastern diplomats as progress for the Iraqi government, said an official in Baghdad.

That official said it is an unfortunately familiar process. If the Iraqis make progress on electricity, the insurgents dynamite power pylons or electrical sub-stations. If the Iraqis make progress on forming local governments, the insurgents target those supporting the effort.

If Iraqis choose to enlist in the military or join the Iraqi police services in hopes of establishing a safe and stable environment, the insurgents target them.

ZIMBABWE: URBAN RENEWAL OR SOCIAL ENGINEERING?

By Elizabeth Kendal
World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission (WEA RLC)
Special to ASSIST News Service

AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- Is Operation Murambasvina an urban renewal project that has been disastrously mismanaged by an uncaring dictator, OR, an attempt at social engineering by a murderous regime that is prepared to use government-engineered famine to decimate its opposition? One thing is certain, the Church is being drawn into the front-line of this battle, and the cost could be high.

President Robert Mugabe has unleashed a tsunami-like wave of destruction upon Zimbabwe's urban poor, who also happen to be those who generally do not support Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF. The demolitions commenced on 23 May under the auspices of "Operation Murambasvina" (Operation Restore Order). It is estimated that some 300,000 homes and have been demolished, leaving some 1.5 million homeless. So far three children have died after being crushed in their homes. Others have died from exposure. More than 30,000 people have been arrested.

The world was quite oblivious to this tragedy until recently when images of bulldozers, security police, burning homes, and mothers and children sitting amidst rubble were secretly recorded and smuggled out of Zimbabwe and broadcast around the world. (This film and other images and articles can be found at: link 1)

The extent of the devastation is now well known. What is still unclear is what is REALLY happening in Zimbabwe, for other details indicate that this operation is indeed much more than a badly handled urban renewal project, and really is a Mugabe/Zanu-PF war against opponents. It appears that, in the light of the recent Velvet, Rose, Orange and Cedar "revolutions", Mugabe and his Zanu-PF are merely engaging in a little "revolution"-prevention, by shattering, impoverishing, dispersing and possibly even killing-off the opposition before it can get organised.

DIDYMUS MUTASA

Three years ago, when Didymus Mutasa was Zanu-PF's Secretary for Administration and in charge of food distribution, he commented regarding food distribution to the opposition, "We would be better off with only 6 million, with our own people who support the liberation struggle. We don’t want all these extra people."

In April 2005, after his election victory, Mugabe appointed Didymus Mutasa to be his Minister for State Security. This role puts Mutasa in charge of the Central Intelligence Organization (Mugabe’s secret police) and in charge of Operation Murambasvina. (Link 2)

On top of this, Mutasa's Ministry for State Security is now in charge of food distribution, although Mutasa claims that there are no food shortages in Zimbabwe. When a journalist recently challenged Mutasa with reports from Zimbabwean Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube that people are starving to death in Bulawayo, Mutasa replied, "The cleric [Ncube] has a psychological disease and he needs to have his head examined because he is a liar." (Link 3)

RE-EDUCATION CAMPS AND SPIES

Christina Lamb reports for Times On Line that those left homeless by Operation Murambasvina are being "herded into re-education camps and told they can have a housing plot only if they swear allegiance to the party of President Robert Mugabe. Those who refuse are loaded into trucks and dumped in remote rural areas, far from their own homes, where food is scarce. Human rights workers say they are being left to die in what they believe is a deliberate strategy by the Mugabe regime to exterminate opponents." (Link 4)

Another Zimbabwean writer comments, "Indeed there are stories coming out of people being trucked out to re-education camps. We saw such camps during the early stages of the farm invasions where farm workers were often exposed to this political re-education. Now it seems the same technique is being used on the urban poor. People are forced to recant and become members of the ruling party before they receive any guarantee of a new home or of food relief. It is almost impossible to credit that this is happening in Zimbabwe in the year 2005 but all the evidence seems to be pointing that way: a Pol Pot type operation to empty the towns and force the poorest of the poor back into the countryside where they will starve to death without government assistance, which we all know they will not get unless they chant the party slogans and sing the party songs." (Link 2)

Harare correspondent Dumisani Muleya said in an opinion piece published in "Business Day" (Johannesburg, 22 June), "The scenario is almost like a theatrical revival of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution or Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge rampage. The political philosophy and motives are similar." (Link 5)

Zim Online reports, "A Zim Online news crew touring Caledonia Farm, converted into a holding camp for thousands of families evicted from their shanty homes in and around Harare, met several agents of the state's dreaded spy Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO). They said they were at the camp to 'monitor the mood' of the families and also to keep a record on who visits them especially non-governmental organizations or members of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, adding that this was being done only as a security precaution." (Link 6)

CHURCH DEEPLY IMPACTED AND THREATENED

All church ministries that operate amongst the poor have been deeply impacted. Their clinics, shelters, orphanages and chapels have been bulldozed and torched along with everything else. (for two reports/testimonies: see link 7)

Churches are defying the orders of the regime and providing shelter, food and blankets to the homeless. The National Pastors Conference, representing over 100 Christian pastors, has demanded that President Mugabe "engage in a war against poverty and not against the poor". The immense scale of this humanitarian catastrophe is stretching the churches.

In 1945, Deitrich Bonhoeffer was executed in a German concentration camp for protesting the injustice and evil of Hitler's murderous Nazi regime. His commitment to discipleship compelled him to act, and he paid with his life. It might not be long before Christian leaders in Zimbabwe, in confronting the evil and inhumanity of the ruling powers, find themselves incarcerated or on a death-list on account of their principled Christian words or actions. It is indeed the Church's calling to be "yeast" in society. As Bonheoffer noted, "To flee into invisibility is to deny the call." As such, the Church's call puts it on a collision course with Mugabe and the Zanu-PF.

Bulawyo's courageous Archbishop Pius Ncube is a long-time open critic of the Mugabe regime. In an interview from the Vatican with Britain's Channel 4, he testified that Mugabe keeps him under tight surveillance. "Mugabe goes around intimidating people, anyone who dares talk is followed, next is torture, next is demonisation or humiliation. I'm standing for the truth and I trust in God. I'm under surveillance myself, my phones are tapped, I've been followed by car, I've even been followed by plane. An aeroplane was following me right from town to a mission station about 140km away, for two hours I was being followed through dust roads." (Link 8)

Archbishop Ncube also compares the present situation in Zimbabwe to that of Cambodia under Pol Pot. Archbishop Ncube expects that many of those exiled into rural areas without food will perish. Likewise, Methodist bishops in South Africa have warned that the situation is "a complete recipe for genocide".

Compelled as the Archbishop is by his commitment to discipleship, he says he has no option but to speak out. "I am aware of the dangerous situation of speaking up but that is the only thing I can do -- to speak up for the people. I'll go back there. I am so angry. I am ready to stand before a gun and be shot."

Godfrey Magwenzi, the charge d'affairs and deputy head of the Zimbabwean Consulate in London, told Channel 4 News that nobody in Zimbabwe took Archbishop Ncube seriously. 'The sewage and filth that spills out of that man's mouth should shame and embarrass all men of the cloth,' he said." (Link 9)

This article is involved, covers how boats are used to smuggle in people to the U.S., it deals with Cubans, but would not hesitate to smuggle in terrorists.

Uses the claim that the boat was stolen, if caught.

"NCTC Revises, Raises Terror Incident List For 2004"
Wednesday, July 06, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON — The National Counter-Terrorism Center (search) counted 3,192 terrorism incidents in 2004, according to acting director John Brennan, who released the data on Tuesday.

That's about five times as many incidents as the 651 counted using a different measure for the year. The information, updated to include data tracked until Tuesday, reveal that nearly 29,000 people were affected by terror — they were either killed, injured or kidnapped. Nineteen percent of the attacks were committed by Islamic extremists.

Of the total, incidents in Iraq accounted for 27 percent of the terror in the world, including five of the 10 largest terrorist attacks in 2004. In several cases, those involved attacks on police recruits.

The new database is "the most comprehensive U.S. effort to date to track terrorist incidents worldwide," Brennan said."

Muslim Separtists: Thai teachers to be allowed
guns

Thai teachers to be allowed guns
School teachers in Thailand's troubled
southern provinces will be allowed to carry
guns, the government has said.

The move is one of a series of measures
designed to keep education staff from leaving
the violence-hit south.

Many of the region's teachers are thought to
have either stopped working or demanded a
transfer from the area.

More than 700 people, including at least 24
teachers, have been killed since January 2004 in unrest which the
government blames on Islamic militants.

Teachers are often targeted as they are seen as symbols of Thailand's
Buddhist authorities.

'Fearful and demoralised'

"We have granted special rights for teachers to carry guns," deputy
education minister Rung Kaewdaeng told reporters on Tuesday, adding
that 2,000 teachers had already requested arms.

"They need guns. This is now a necessity as
many people have survived attacks because
they shot back at the attackers," Mr Rung is
quoted as saying by the French news agency
AFP.

They will be provided with cheap or
second-hand firearms and flak jackets, he
added.

In the most violent areas of southern Thailand,
teachers are already escorted to school by
security personnel.

Education Minister Adisai Bodharamik admitted
that teachers there were "fearful and
demoralised".

"If teachers want to move out from the region,
we cannot stop them," Mr Adisai told reporters.

He said he had already directed education
authorities to approve transfers for more than
2,700 teachers out of the area, to be replaced
by volunteers.
