The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

Bomber killed near Turk PM office

Friday, July 1, 2005; Posted: 5:39 a.m. EDT (09:39 GMT)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/07/01/turkey.shooting/index.html

ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) -- Turkish police have shot and killed a suspected
suicide bomber as he ran toward Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's office,
police said.

The shooting occurred about 10 a.m. (0700 GMT) Friday outside the
Ministry of Justice in Ankara.

The man apparently tried to get into the Ministry of Justice building
using a staff entrance, but a device believed to be a bomb on his body
was detected by a machine, according to CNN's sister network, CNN Turk.

He then apparently panicked and pulled the bomb's fuse, but it did not
detonate. Authorities seized and handcuffed him, but he managed to
escape and began running toward the prime minister's office.

A guard at that office shot him, CNN Turk said.

Witnesses said the man was about 35 years old. An identity card was
found on his body, but was later found to be fake.

The same man apparently was involved in a similar incident last June,
when U.S. President George W. Bush and others were attending the NATO
Summit in Istanbul, CNN Turk reported.

Details of that incident were not immediately available.

The man is believed to be a member of the illegal group Great Eastern
Islamic Raiders Front, the network said.

"The event is not important and doesn't affect our duties," Justice
Minister Cemil Cicek told reporters outside of the ministry after the
incident, The Associated Press reported.

Although authorities did not immediately confirm the man was a suicide
bomber, a CNN Turk correspondent on the scene said a device removed
from his body after the shooting was a bomb.

Police cordoned off the area in front of the ministry, and the suspect
could be seen lying on the ground as a member of the bomb squad,
wearing protective clothing, removed his shirt and then a tan colored
cylinder with wires coming out of it, according to AP.

Members of militant Kurdish, leftist and Islamic groups are active in
Turkey and have carried out bombings in the past, AP said.

CNN Turk correspondent Hande Firat and reporter Dicle contributed to
this report.

I now am on Doxil, a reworked drug from the past that now has fewer side effects. Thankfully, I still have alot of new drugs available that we haven't tried yet. The drugs you are talking about are the new "targeted" drugs. I think my onc is trying the drugs he knows work first to get the desired response and reserving the newer less proven drugs for if/when the older ones stop working.

Arms sent to terrorist stronghold
By TIMOTHY O'CONNOR
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: July 1, 2005)

WHITE PLAINS — The wea-pons that a Yonkers man admitted he illegally shipped overseas went to a gun shop he owned in a terrorist hotbed teeming with armed insurgents.

Fernando Sero, 35, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to illegally sending fully automatic parts for AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines in March.

"He sold the weapons to any willing buyer," Assistant U.S. Attorney Perry Carbone said during Sero's court hearing. Those willing buyers could have included members of the Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemaah Islamiyah — both associated with al-Qaida. Communist guerrillas and members of a Muslim separatist insurgency group called the Moro Islamic Liberation Front also would have been in the market for weapons.

The U.S. ambassador to the Philippines recently told an Australian news program that Mindanao was becoming like Afghanistan before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"It's one of the most ungovernable places in the world," said Angel Rabasa, a senior policy analyst with the Rand Corp., who has written extensively about security issues in Southeast Asia. "Mindanao is like an armed camp. It is awash in weapons."

Sero was arrested following a domestic violence incident March 25 at his home on Rugby Road. He held a gun to his wife's head, then released her and engaged in a standoff with Yonkers police before surrendering, police said.

But federal authorities were already investigating Sero. He was indicted five days after his arrest on charges that he illegally shipped weapons to Mindanao on four separate occasions dating from September 2003. The most recent shipment was three days before his arrest in the domestic violence case.

His family lives in a compound on the heavily armed island and Sero, a naturalized U.S. citizen, made frequent trips back there, authorities said. But those trips weren't just to see family. Sero shipped the guns to an arms shop he owned on the island, federal authorities said.

Sero used a false name, Ferdie Resada, and falsified airway bills to send the shipments of automatic weapons, authorities said. Sero and his wife, a medical professional, have lived in the house on Rugby Road for a little more than a year, along with their young son, neighbors said.

Sero's lawyer, Richard Willstatter of White Plains, did not return calls seeking comment. Sero faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine when he is sentenced Sept. 29.

Over Ninety Percent of Terror Attacks in Iraq Not From Iraqis
By: Tim Saler · Section: Diaries

Promoted from Diaries...

From the Associated Press,

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. and Iraqi officials have long believed that foreign fighters infiltrating Iraq through its porous borders with Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia are behind most suicide missions, and the recent wave of bloody strikes has confirmed that thinking.
Authorities have found little evidence that Iraqis have been behind the near-daily stream of suicide attacks over the past six months, U.S. and Iraqi intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the subject's sensitivity.

The key role of foreign fighters in suicide attacks is one reason many senior military officials, including the top U.S. general in the Middle East, tend to view the war in Iraq as slowly developing into an international struggle against militant Islam.

Iraqis have carried out less than 10 percent of more than 500 suicide attacks since 2003, according to one defense official. At least 213 attacks have occurred this year - 172 by vehicle and 41 by bombers on foot - according to a count by The Associated Press.

How much longer will it take for the Democrats and the media (and some Republicans, of course) to stop calling the terrorist attacks taking place in Iraq part of an "insurgency"?

More below the fold.

Jul 1st, 2005: 09:59:59, Not Rated

When the Democrats and the media use the term "insurgency," they are implying that these attacks are coming from the discontent and dissatisfaction of the Iraqi people. According to these new statistics, that is far from the case.
This is an invasion by any stretch of the imagination. Foreign fighters have invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq and are fighting both Iraqis as well as United States/Coalition soldiers.

In every poll, the Iraqi people say that they want the United States to remain in Iraq until they are capable of defending themselves on their own. If the attacks were coming largely from Iraqis within their own country, what would they be defending themselves against? Themselves?

The Iraqi people know that these terrorists are coming from outside their country. The United States military on the ground know that these terrorists are coming from outside the country. They are not insurgent Iraqis, equivalent to our leaders in the Revolutionary War. They are foreign invaders, and it's about time the media start telling the truth about what's really going on over there.

I'm not holding my breath.

Here's more on the al qaeda Military Manual:

The Heart of Darkness: "The Al Qaeda Manual"
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, June 29, 2005
The QandO Blog

If you're interested in a peek inside the jihadi mind, and specifically the mind of a jihadist recruited for al Qaeda, you might be interested in the 28 page translation of "The Al Qaeda manual" by the FBI which is on the DoJ website (http://www.usdoj.gov/ag/manualpart1_1.pdf). It was found by police during a raid in Manchester, England.

It's some fascinating stuff. It is described as the "military series" manual.

What's it all about?

From the introduction:

In the name of Allah, the merciful and compassionate

To those champions who avowed the truth day and night......And wrote with their blood and sufferings these phrases...

-*-The confrontation that we are calling for with the apostateregimes does not know Socratic debates...,Platonic ideals..., nor Aristotelian diplomacy. But it knows the dialogue of bullets, the ideals of assassination, bombing, and destruction, and the diplomacy of the cannon and machine-gun.

***... Islamic governments have never and will never be established through peaceful solutions and cooperative councils. They are established as they [always] have been

by pen and gun
by word and bullet
by tongue and teeth
In other words, "we're not here to talk, debate or negotiate, we're here to take over by force".

Nice. So expect no quarter from these mokes. This is again reaffirmed with a recounting of history according to the jihandist. Note that most of the leaders of the Middle East, present and past, are lumped into the same camp with we Western infidels:

Unbelief is still the same. It pushed Abou Jahl-may Allah curse him-and Kureish's valiant infidels to battle the prophet -God bless and keep him -and to torture his companions -may Allah's grace be on them. It is the same unbelief that drove Sadat, Hosni Mubarak, Gadhafi, Hafez Assad, Saleh, Fahed -Allah's curse be upon the non-believing leaders -and all the apostate Arab rulers to torture, kill, imprison, and torment Moslems. These young men realized that an Islamic government would never be established except by the bomb and rifle. Islam does not coincide or make a truce with unbelief, but rather confronts it.

The confrontation that Islam calls for with these godless and apostate regimes, does not know Socratic debates, Platonic ideals nor Aristotelian diplomacy. But it knows the dialogue of bullets, the ideals of assassination, bombing, and destruction, and the diplomacy of the cannon and machine-gun.

The young came to prepare themselves for Jihad [holy war], commanded by the majestic Allah's order in the holy Koran.

[Koranic verse:] "Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies of Allah and your enemies, and others besides whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know."

That brings us to the aim of the specific manual as well as the aim of the movement overall:

I present this humble effort to these young Moslem men who are pure, believing, and fighting for the cause of Allah. It is my contribution toward paving the road that leads to majestic Allah and establishes a caliphate according to the prophecy.

So how do they plan to do that specifically? The writer outlines some ways they plan to strike:

Missions Required of the Military Organization:

The main mission for which the Military Organization is
responsible is:

The overthrow of the godless regimes and their replacement with an Islamic regime. Other missions consist of the following:

1. Gathering information about the enemy, the land, the
installations, and the neighbors.
2. Kidnaping enemy personnel, documents, secrets, and arms.
3. Assassinating enemy personnel as well as foreign tourists.
4. Freeing the brothers who are captured by the enemy.
5. Spreading rumors and writing statements that instigate people against the enemy.
6. Blasting and destroying the places of amusement, immorality, and sin; not a vital target.
7. Blasting and destroying the embassies and attacking vital
economic centers.
8. Blasting and destroying bridges leading into and out of the cities. Bridges, embassies (Africa), and "places of amusement, immorality, and sin" (see Bali). Although the latter is not vital it must be appealing to these fanatics. Note also that assasination of both enemy personnel as well as tourists is ok.

Last but not least, they're charged with 'spreading rumors and writing statement that instigate people against the enemy". Draw your own conclusions from that one.

As I said, an fascinating peek into some pretty dark minds. It provides a look at the future if we, and others, don't take this very seriously and defeat it.

Here is more on that plane crash:

Small plane crashes in Rockland County inlet after pilot deploys its parachute

June 30, 2005, 10:51 PM EDT

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. (AP) _ A small plane crashed in an inlet in Bowline Point Park on Thursday after the pilot suffered leg pains, lost control and deployed the plane's parachute.

The pilot, who was rescued from the water, was the only person aboard and didn't suffer any serious injuries, Rockland County executive's office spokeswoman C.J. Miller said. The pilot had pains in his legs and couldn't pull the plane out of a dive, Miller said.

The pilot, Ilan Reich, 50, of New York City, was taken to Nyack Hospital, said Sgt. Wayne Dunn, of the Village of Haverstraw Police Department. Dunn said he believed Reich cut his hand getting out of the plane.

The Cirrus SR22 fixed-wing single-engine plane was lost on the radar about 10 miles from Westchester County Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac said. Reich issued a mayday call at 4:40 p.m.

Reich deployed a parachute that was part of his plane, Dunn said. The feature is standard on Cirrus planes: Force is applied to a handle that ignites a rocket, which helps to unfurl the parachute, according to the Cirrus Web site.

The plane, tail No. 3452L, was owned by 52 Lima Corp., of New York City, Salac said. It sank.
