Taliban commanders held
June 13, 2005
KABUL (PPI): Troops of Afghan National Army (ANA) have captured a senior Taliban operative in the militant-plaguing south Afghanistan, Defense Ministry spokesman said Sunday. ANAs troops in a mop-up conducted in Tajdan and Taban areas of Uruzgan province captured a Taliban local commander Mullah Juma Thursday, Zahir Azimi told journalists at a news conference.
A large number of arms, munitions and documents including pamphlets and night letters were also found from his possession. Another Talibans local commander Sardar escaped from the scene, the spokesman added.

Pir Gilanis bodyguard commits suicide KABUL (Pajhwok Afghan News):
A bodyguard of jihadi leader Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani Sunday committed suicide. The immediate cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained.
Eidi Mohammad (22), sprayed four bullets into his chest, said an official working in Pir Gilanis office. Mohammad was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased is said to be a resident of Saidabad district of the central Wardak province. Before ending it all, he dispatched a letter to his family, colleagues informed.
SANAA, 14 June 2005 A Yemeni state security court yesterday set July 11 for the verdict in the case of eight suspected Al-Qaeda supporters charged with plotting to blow up Western embassies in Yemen.
The court held its ninth and final hearing yesterday in the trial of an Iraqi, two Syrians and five Yemenis during which prosecutors and defense lawyers summed up their arguments. Three representatives of the US Department of Justice attended the session.
In his argument, prosecutor Khaled Al-Mawri said the defendants posed a threat to society and asked the court to hand down the maximum sentences of between ten to 15 years in jail. Muhammad Al-Ezzani, a lawyer defending six of the suspects, called on the court to acquit his clients, arguing that their arrests were not legal.
He said the defendants were detained by the countrys Political Security (intelligence) office far beyond legal time periods. He also argued that there was no solid evidence to convict the defendants.
The eight men were charged with planning to attack the British and Italian embassies and a French cultural center in Sanaa.
Prosecutors have submitted to the court documents seized by police showing that the group had also planned to attack military bases in Saudi Arabia, as well as US civilians, Western companies, restaurants and schools in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Among the documents were maps and alleged attack plans and orders for explosives and rocket-propelled grenades.
When the trial began on March 21, only three of the defendants pleaded guilty to planning attack on the British Embassy, but they and the other five suspects denied involvement in a conspiracy to blow up the Italian Embassy or the French center.
The court was also told that the defendants belonged to an Al-Qaeda affiliated organization called the Tawheed Brigades.

Coast unprotected despite many warnings of terror attack threats
By Caroline Mango
Top security chiefs in the country, especially those along the coastline, have once again been put on high security alert following reports that two groups allied to Osama bin Laden could be hiding in the Coast Province.
The groups Al-tthad-al-Islamiya and Al-TakfirWalHijra are directly linked to Musabal Zarqawi, a close ally of Osama bin Laden. Zarqawi is said to have had terror cells in Somalia and Kenya.
Such an alert by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) puts the security agents on the spot and, more so, those manning the porous and vast borders along the coastline.
Due to past weaknesses in manning the borders, it has been easy for terrorists and drug traffickers to enter Kenya.
Recently, Immigration assistant minister Ananiah Mwaboza said 5,000 immigrants of Somali origin were living in Mombasa. He gave them an ultimatum to own up or be pursued and extradited.
Just before the assistant minister spoke, 63 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in Mombasa and accused of entering the country illegally.
Some of the suspects had genuine passports, while others held fake papers. It was unclear how the foreigners entered the country undetected.
The Coastal borders, right from Shimoni in Kwale to Kiunga in Lamu, have in the past been the easiest illegal entry points into Kenya and the region at large.
Investigations have revealed that no single police patrol boat surveys the coastline. Police rely on surveillance by the Kenya Ports Authority and the Kenya Navy.
The beaches, which are a second easy access route, are also not manned, save for the few private guards contracted by some hotels for routine patrol.
The six-kilometre no mans land between Kenya and Tanzania around Lunga Lunga is occupied by all sorts of people from Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia.
Local MP Abdallah Ngozi says: "We do not know what goes on there and the kind of people who live there."
The Old Town in Mombasa is another entry point for both drug traffickers and possible terrorists.
In early 2003, a suspected terrorist who had stayed for several months in the Old Town area, which borders the central police station, detonated a grenade after being arrested, killing himself and a police officer.
Before the incident, security sources indicated that the suspect used to communicate with his confederates from a cyber cafÈ located a stones throw distance from the station.
During interviews last week, top security agents who did not wish to be named said better security arrangements were required at the coast.
They called for more personnel and resources "and not mere alerts and security meetings".
They say another notorious entry point for illegal immigrants is the Ngomeni landing bay in Malindi, which has been frequently used by Somalis fighting in their country.
Currently, more than 250 Somalis have settled in the Ngomeni area, and most of them have acquired Kenyan national identity cards through dubious means.
"They use simple boats to gain access into the country due to lack of a police base at the entry point. They come and go as they wish," says an officer.
"The police at the coast do not have a single patrol boat, how do you expect patrols to go on along the coastline or even the beaches," asks the officer.
Our beaches, which are mostly used by fishermen from as far as Tanzania, are "open for all", as the work of the Tourist Police Unit remains to be seen.
Officers attached to the unit are based in Mombasas central business district and they concentrate on fighting crime within the town just like their regular colleagues.
The Somali-Kiunga border has no police base either. A terror suspect believed to have masterminded the Kikambala bombing is said to have entered Pate Island using a speedboat from Kiunga and left the same way.
Another officer in Kwale says the Lunga-Lunga border is too vast to be manned by officers attached to the Lunga Lunga police post, which is yet to be elevated to a fully-fledged police station.
With the new alert, players in the hotel industry want the police to take immediate action to ensure security for visitors.
Mohammed Hersi, chairman of the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers, Coast region, says as much as stakeholders in the industry have intensified security checks and patrols, police need to step up surveillance.
"Terrorism is here with us and it is disheartening to note that police have limited capacity, personnel and resources to respond to crime," he says.
The hotelier adds that police at the coast must be fully prepared to tackle any terrorist threat at all times.
"Are our officers able to effectively respond to terrorism threats, and how prepared are they? These are the issues that need to be addressed in order to have a safe environment for tourism to flourish."
When terrorists hit a hotel in Kikambala two years ago, experts had to be flown in from Nairobi to handle the situation.
This, according to our security source, means that there are inadequate security personnel trained on preventing terrorist attacks and handling a bombing scene.
"There is more than just meetings by security personnel in fighting terrorism. Unless the issue of equipment, personnel and expertise is addressed, police at the coast are not fully prepared to fight terrorism," says the source.

THANKS Oorang for both these articles.
You're welcome. Slow news days all around the world, IMO, which can be a good thing. Except for M. Jackson, of course (ugh). Now, if they would only give as much coverage to the Sami al-Arian trial (right, uh huh).
Do you have any info on this?

CHICAGO (AP) An American Airlines plane flying from New York to Seattle was diverted to Chicago on Monday evening after a suspicious item was found on board.
The 158 passengers and six crew members were evacuated from the plane after it landed in Chicago at 8:30 p.m., said American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Francis Fagen. There were no injuries.
Flight 289 originated from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and was en route to Seattle when officials at O'Hare International Airport received a request from the flight crew to land in Chicago to inspect something on the aircraft, said Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Kristen Cabanban.
After the plane was searched, Fagen said passengers returned to the aircraft and it was to continue on to Seattle.
Here's 3 more articles and I looked at some more.
No info as to what the suspicious item was.
