You are probably right.
But there WAS a time when naming a new director was under serious discussion, at least, and Felt was lobbying for the job. He'd do anything for it, as we have seen.
Nixon was probably becoming a little paranoid at some of the events of the day. Or maybe a little more paranoid and suspicious than his usual. There may have been a mutual distrust between the FBI and the White House for some time. If there were any serious discussion about positions in the Bureau and it still failed to bear fruit for Felt, this could have just added to his desire to see Nixon go down if opportunity knocked.
