Well, you have something here.

But then again: Reagan was a once in a century leader... perhaps a once in a country's lifetime leader. And he think he would have risen to the top anyway.

Good question. Of course, RR ran against him in '68 (came out ahead of Rockefeller) and there was no love lost between the two Californians. But RR would have had a far better shot at the top spot in '76 (remember someone suggesting he serve as a co-prez with Ford????)--no Watergate raining on Republicans.
