Dick DeVos, the former president of Alticor Inc., has announced that he will run for governor of Michigan in the 2006 election.

DeVos told 24 Hour News 8 the news on Thursday while on Mackinac Island where he is attending a conference this weekend.

DeVos is a major Republican donor and the husband of former state GOP Chairwoman Betsy DeVos.

He filed paperwork last month with the Secretary of State Office. Creating an exploratory committee is a first step toward forming a full campaign committee.

Them DEMS are quick to condemn:

GOP Candidate for Governor is Wrong on Jobs, Wrong on Outsourcing to China

LANSING- Following Dick DeVos entering the race for Governor, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer welcomed him into the Michigan gubernatorial contest.
“The Democratic Party welcomes Dick DeVos into the Governor’s race. With the Michigan economy needing help, Dick DeVos is wrong for the job because his idea of economic development is creating jobs in China,” said Brewer. “He is a man who believes in downsizing jobs at home while investing hundreds of millions of dollars overseas, especially in China. He supports outsourcing our jobs and he supports free trade which has devastated the Michigan economy, costing us hundreds of thousands of good-paying manufacturing jobs.”
Dick DeVos has eliminated Michigan jobs while investing hundreds of millions of dollars overseas. As President of Amway, DeVos presided over massive layoffs including 1,300 jobs, 900 of them in Western Michigan.
DeVos also supports outsourcing. He and his wife Betsy gave thousands of dollars to groups and organizations that advocate outsourcing American jobs. The couple has a foundation that has given thousands to The Acton Institute, The Heritage Foundation and The Hudson Institute. All three organizations have writers that openly advocate for or defend the practice of outsourcing.
DeVos supports free trade, despite how it has hurt Michigan – Amway leaders have long supported trade with China and they lobbied for Permanent Normal Trade Relations for China, according to their lobbying disclosure reports.
“Governor Granholm’s Jobs for Michigan Fund, a $2 billion bond proposal, shows that she wants to invest in Michigan. Dick DeVos invests millions overseas, building in China instead of creating jobs at home,” added Brewer. “DeVos supports free trade with China while the Governor supports fair trade that helps Michigan. The choice couldn’t be clearer.”

Rich DeVos and Jay VanAndel started the AMWAY business as partners. Dick DeVos is Rich's son.

Although I truly miss the scenery, I don't not miss the politics and power chain in the Grand Rapids/Holland area.

A person who is not Dutch, or Christian-Reformed has very little chance of advancing in industry out there.

If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much....
Flame away, Michiganders!!!!

I think DeVos is not a smart pick for the GOP in Michigan. He's made some pretty bizzare comments in the past and I think the Dems are really going to pounce on him.

A better choice would be a solid conservative with no baggage (and military experience to boot!). I'd like to see State Senator Valde Garcia consider running.

LOL...never heard that saying before!! Hate to admit it, but I do agree with the combo of Christian Reformed and dutch in regards to West Michigan.

I feel that DeVos is going to have a hard time; just look at all the flack and bad press that Betsy got.

Debbie Stabintheback has gotta go too; I think her term is up in 2006, and I hope the Reps have a good candidate in the wings to run against her. I think she will be harder to defeat than grandholm.

Our current governess has made some pretty bizarre comments in the past, too. The Democratic candidate before her was even more bizarre. It's a bizarre state.

Holland would be Reformed Church of America... whilst Grand Rapids would be the Christian Reformed Church.

Should be a clean race. I understand the current Governor of Michigan really likes Dick.
