AUSTIN Texas Agricultural Commissioner Susan Combs officially opened her campaign for state comptroller today without waiting for incumbent Carole Keeton Strayhorn to make her next move.
Strayhorn has been eyeing a run for governor in next years elections. Combs and Stayhorn are Republicans, as is Gov. Rick Perry.
Combs, a former state legislator before her 1998 election as agriculture commissioner, said she expects an open seat for the comptrollers office next year based on past discussions with Strayhorn.
"She has been aware that I was running for this office," Combs said. "Im in the race to stay. Im in the race to win."
Combs calls herself a committed conservative who believes that government "must do more with less."
She has a background in ranching and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She likes to repeat former Gov. George W. Bushs description of her: "He said that I was a woman of high energy, even making coffee nervous."
Combs said her priorities would include a tight-fisted approach to handing state finances.
"When government forgets whose money it is, government makes mistakes," she said. No Democrats have yet surfaced for the job once held by John Sharp and Bob Bullock.

And I hope Strylander never wins another election in her life.
Or whatever her last name of the week happens to be...
For a second, I thought it was about ALAN Combs.
I was like 'Gee, I didn't know he was a texas boy. He looked more like someone from Vermont.'
What's wrong with her? I've heard she shook up some of the agencies real good in Texas.
Carole Keeton Whatever!
Yikes. I checked this out expecting to see news about ALAN Combs or maybe Sean "Puffy" "P. Diddy" Combs... who is this woman?
I was under the impression that she was a fiscal but not social conservative(not that it matters as much for this position).

Tall Texan Ping!
Anyone is better in the Comptroller's Office than one stupid grandma!
Combs will do a good job as Comptroller
She also criticized the redistricting in Texas which added new Republicans in the US House.
Clarification: that's Carole Keeton McWhatever Rylander Strayhorn he's describing - the woman who regularly engages her mouth before putting her brain in gear.
Thanks for the clarification.
How fast the perception of Strayhorn has changed. In 2002, she led the Republican ticket to victory statewide, outpolling Cornyn, Perry and Dewhurst by considerable margins. Some may have forgotten that White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan is one of her sons by the first marriage to Mr. McClellan. That Mr. McClellan wrote a sensational book recently charging that LBJ was an accomplice to the murder of JFK. Strayhorn's father (Keeton) was a widely admired dean of the TX Law School in past decades. It's hard to imagine at this point just what office Strayhorn will seek, but has been regularly on TX ballots since 1986.
Here's a short reference to Combs' pro-abortion position:

Agriculture commissioner eyes move up political ladder
KELLEY SHANNON
Associated Press
AUSTIN - Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs is a tall, fast-talking Texan who leaves little doubt she's done her homework.
Get her going on Mexico's water debt to the United States and she'll tell you about border reservoir levels and satellite images of northern Mexico's water supply.
If it's school nutrition, she's ready with statistics on childhood obesity and diabetes and dollar figures on school contracts with food vending companies.
Abortion? She's pro-choice.
There's taller, and fast-talkin' isn't necessarily a virtue.
He is, however, married to Monica Crowley's sister..
