In other words, "I (Nixon) am not a crook" was not so far fetched a statement.I'd say it would be closer to Algore's "No Controlling Legal Authority" statement. The fact that no law may have covered what he did doesn't mean what he did was right.

Nixon was a patriot but did a lot of things not in our long-term interest. (wage and price freeze, opening China, detente..)
