You're right,of course. In school I had to learn Latin and French; in the military, Vietnamese and overseas picked up passable Tagalog; in college, ancient Greek and German.
Most people can learn anything they want to. This women by not learning is living in a closed society.
BTW, French sucked; no one would talk to me.
I dunno. About a year ago I saw a tape on a mass naturalization ceremony, and the federal guy was issuing the oath in Spanish and then bubbled about all the new "Americans".
I'd feel a lot better if someone could assure me that they all had to speak English before being naturalized.
Many Mixteco-speaking immigrants remain isolated when they reach the United States because they don't speak Spanish or English.
Barrera said she loves her daughter and denies hitting her. Her attorneys say their client would not even be in court if she were not a poor immigrant, one who speaks only an indigenous Mexican language, Mixteco. Many Mixteco-speaking immigrants remain isolated when they reach the United States because they don't speak Spanish or English.
She's either illegal, or was brought over by a legal resident. Her son? So why are they in different locations? This is the part that troubles me, though:
But attorneys for the Pattersons say the case isn't merely about language. The child, Linda Barrera Cano, has said her mother yanked her ear and her brother's wife hit her with a large stick.
Is that BS? Or does that mean they take parenting seriously?
The Pattersons' attorney, Amanda Crowell, has argued that Linda has no bond with her mother because she lived most of her early childhood with her grandmother in Mexico.
At the time Linda's teacher filed for custody of the girl, Barrera was living in Virginia, and Linda lived with her brother, his teenage wife, their children and other relatives.
Several months after Linda was taken from her brother's home to live with the teacher's family, she was placed with the Pattersons, who want to adopt her. Emily Patterson is a guidance counselor at Linda's school.
But the Pattersons have said that when Linda came to them, they had to instruct her about hygiene such as brushing her teeth and taking a shower.
"She was like a hopeless little puppy," said Danny Hill, Linda's school principal. "I saw a hopeless little girl. Her eyes were hopeless."
Now, the Pattersons say, Linda is flourishing in school and is fluent in English. To send her back to a non-English speaking household would set her back, they say.
Hardy Turner, whose two daughters are friends with the girl, said Linda believes the Pattersons are her family.
"She's had a taste of love, and she doesn't want to go back," Turner said.
I'd love to see the backround check on these jokers. This girl is easy pickin's, imo. It would be a good thing to get that kid out of the hands of these manipulating assholes. Would it be kind to send mother and child back to Mexico? Does Mommy have a green card? Don't trust most teachers! They're spewing typical social services bullshit.
Sorry everyone, but system abusing teachers and government agents trumps an illegal alien any day of the week....
High five for Mrs. HiJinx!!
You may well be right about the teacher, but I always wonder what awful thing some teacher did to someone to make them paint most with such a broad brush. FWIW I didn't start teaching til late in life, and didn't go thru the usual teacher training (read indoctrination) to become one, so I don't think I have been brainwashed. Most of the teachers I have known are pretty regular people. Some are crazed liberals, and some are (yes, can you believe it?) conservatives. I'm sorry you have such a negative view of a whole group.

In Cambridge, MA they proudly claim to have ballots in 30 different languages. Go figure.
Thanks, Spotted Owl. I was about to post that this woman doesn't have the mental capacity to comprehend anything beyond her "receptive window" of youth. That she is ignorant of basic hygiene speaks volumes about so-called "noble savages" supposedly worthy of our sympathy and tax money. These people are Mexico's problem, not ours. Let the Patterson family rescue the little girl while the woman should be sent back to her isolated enclave where she understands things.
Allowing any person so culturally backward here legitimately would be considered gross negligence. This woman was here illegally and this case should never have wasted the court's time or our money trying it.
Rereading that I came off a bit harsh when the intention was to point out that no amount of liberal well wishing will turn a lump of coal into a diamand. People are amalgums of genetics, culture and environment. This woman from a very isolated Indian tribe who can't converse in either English or Spanish shouldn't have been the on trial in the first place. The jerks who got her here on lies and false promises are the ones who should be doing time.
Can you say, Anchor Baby?
Or perhaps:
Bebé del Ancla
I hope you know that I didn't mean to offend anyone personally. I used to hold teachers in high regard until the last several years. Imo, most of them are incompetent syncopants, marching to the NEA. I had a run-in with two of my youngest's teachers, several years ago. They tag teamed me in the parking lot, and I smoked them. Hehe...
Oh. I hear that alot (about teachers being NEA sycophants). I taught in TX where we don't have unions, so that may account for my different experience.
Teachers are public employees, and as such, they do serve at the pleasure of the public. And the public should have input, and parents above all. On the other hand, I saw far more parents who could ahve cared less what happened in class as long as we kept the kids out of their hair and handed them a diploma after a certain amount of time.
