Two arrested over murder of Robert McCartney
TWO men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Belfast father-of-two Robert McCartney, police said today.
The men, aged 36 and 49, were arrested following police operations in Belfast and Birmingham.
Mr McCartney, 33, died after he was attacked outside Magennis's Bar in Belfast city centre on January 30.
His sister, Catherine McCartney, welcomed the news.
She said: "We obviously welcome these arrests but remain cautious. People have been arrested before and let out. Others have walked into police stations, stared at walls and said nothing."
The IRA expelled three members for their role in the brutal stabbing of Mr McCartney outside the pub.
Last month police visited the sisters - and Mr McCartney's partner Bridgeen Hagans - at their Short Strand home to tell them "criminal elements" were threatening to burn down their homes and the business that one of them runs.
The women believe they are being targeted by republicans for their high-profile campaign to bring their brother's killers to justice.
The sisters have lobbied politicians in Washington, Brussels and Dublin to try to secure a breakthrough in the case.

If you think the Bronx is tough, or Detroit or other places like that, try Northern Ireland. It remains to be seen how this plays out for the McCartneys but it's a start.

Arrested is fine, but I want to see them locked up for good. Not strutting around Belfast knowing that the population is too scared to turn them in.
